With winter temperatures expected to return to normal following last year’s mild season, Massachusetts residents who warm their homes with heating oil can expect spend a record amount in the next six months, according to a forecast released by the federal government Wednesday. The US Energy Information Administration said that with heating oil prices projected to rise to $3.80 a gallon this season, the country’s heating oil customers -- most of whom live in the Northeast -- will likely spend an average $2,494 to heat their homes between now and March. That’s more than any previous winter on record

The toughest part of the job for first lady Michelle Obama? Not being able to stroll around her local drugstore. In an interview with NBC's iVillage, the first lady said she sometimes chafes at the bubble of the White House. “I can’t walk outside. I can’t take my dog for a walk," the first lady said. Acknowledging that most Americans face much more hardship and difficulty than she does, she said she nevertheless sometimes regrets the "loss of privacy" and "loss of anonymity." "I tease, it’s like one day I am going to walk out that gate.

In its latest line of excuses, the State Department is now saying officials never blamed violence in the Middle East, particularly the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya, on a YouTube video. The State Department denied Tuesday it ever concluded that the deadly consulate attack Sept. 11 in Libya was an unplanned outburst prompted by an anti-Islam movie.

Two moderate GOP senators leaving the upper chamber at the end of this term are joining the National Institute for Civil Discourse. Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) decided not to run for re-election, and Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) was defeated in the GOP primary. The nonpartisan center for debate, research, education and policy about civility in public discourse was created at the University of Arizona in February 2011, in the aftermath of the Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) shooting. The honorary chairman are former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. The honorary co-chairs are former Senate Majority

When Barack Obama was up by 4 percentage points in the polls, the media said the race was a dead heat. Now that Obama is down by 4 percentage points in the polls, the media say he is dead meat. The media giveth, and the media taketh away. Fickle be the name of the media. The media mind-set is dependent not on fact, but on attitude. And now comes a man who can change that attitude: Joe Biden. Say it ain’t so, Joe. Say it ain’t all on you, Joe, as you prepare to meet the Janesville Juggernaut, Paul Ryan,

Texas Gov. Rick Perry isn’t worried about his former primary rival’s reluctance to push legislation restricting abortion rights, saying on Wednesday that he’s confident Mitt Romney will appoint “constitutionalists” to the Supreme Court. “I think the Supreme Court is where that issue will be decided, from the standpoint of how America’s going — We’ll have a Supreme Court decision, and that’s where the focus will be,” Perry said on CBS’ “This Morning.” “He’s said very clearly that he’s going to put people who are constitutionalists on the Supreme Court.” Romney, who supported abortion rights as governor of Massachusetts, said Tuesday

"The Dozen Most Overrated Black People": Can you imagine if I (or any other columnist) actually wrote an article with this title and subject? Not only would I not write such a thing because it's professional suicide, but more importantly I don't view the world through a lens of race -- and neither does any other non-leftist columnist whom I read or know, whether pasty white folks like me or black conservatives such as Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Deroy Murdock, or Star Parker. For example, I might suggest that Barack Obama is the single most overrated person on the planet, Headline split by staff.

Grassroots organization Let Freedom Ring plans to criticize Vice President Joe Biden for failing to live up to his Catholic faith by supporting same-sex marriage. The ad, expected run during the Vice Presidential Debate on Thursday, features Jo Ann Nardelli, the first Vice President of the Pennsylvania State Federation of Democratic Women. Nardelli explains that although she supported Biden in 2008, she signals disappointment that he led the charge to support same-sex marriage. “When I heard Vice President Biden speak about same-sex marriage and I knew the platform for President Obama was same-sex marriage.

President Obama is scheduled to meet with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this afternoon in the Oval Office, as more damaging details about the terrorist attack against a United States consulate in Libya emerge. Yesterday, the State Department revealed that the attack was “unprecedented” and wasn’t preceded by a protest over the controversial YouTube video, directly contradicting explanation of the attack by the Obama administration. Meanwhile, Robert Gibbs, this morning tried to minimize the damage, defending U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s assertion that the attack was sparked by the YouTube video. Gibbs admitted that Rice was wrong,

On Sept. 11, the day he was killed in what we now know was an assassination deliberately planned to coincide with the terrorist attacks 11 years earlier, Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens approved a cable to the State Department warning about the deteriorating security situation in the Libyan city of Benghazi. The dispatch noted that the leaders of two militias, some of whose members were tasked with protecting the American consulate, had threatened to quit, in protest of alleged American support for a prime ministerial candidate they did not like. I just learned a few days ago that he was one of the two former navy seals killed in Benghazi. It broke my heart,” Romney said to a crowd on the campaign trail. Glen Doherty was one of four Americans

Barack Obama has been known to do an easy interview every once and a while, but his latest radio interview might top them all. In the interview, conducted by Tom Joyner and Sybil Wilkes, President Obama is told, "We got you, we got your back." The two interviewers flatter the president, as he in turns gives them a pep talk, telling them not to give up. Here's an excerpt: BARACK OBAMA: You were around in 2008. TOM JOYNER: Oh, yeah. BARACK OBAMA: How many times did everybody say that somehow we weren’t going to win.

White privilege consists of being white. Black privilege consists of denouncing white people in ways that would be considered racist if the shoe were on the other foot. Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, a man whose website modestly describes him as a “Professor, Author, Speaker, Public Intellectual,” has assembled a list of what he believes are the 15 most overrated white people to prove the point. Any college faculty member who tried assembling a list of the 15 most overrated black people would soon be the target of the most overzealous witch-hunt since Salem.

Things quickly turned sour for President Obama on Monday in San Francisco at what was supposed to be a stopover in friendly territory. Instead, he was greeted by angry protesters from both wings of the political spectrum. Even independent libertarians expressed their disappointment in a president that seems to be hemorrhaging support with each passing day. Protesters swirled around the entrance to the Bill Graham Auditorium, tormenting the ticket-holders waiting in line to see Obama and radical socialist musician Michael Franti. What made this particular protest unique was that its participants spanned the entire spectrum of American politics,

On Wednesday, the ladies of The View discussed the backlash actress Stacey Dash has received since tweeting her support for Mitt Romney. Barbara Walters argued that Dash’s remark wouldn’t have elicited such a negative reaction if she were white. Whoopi Goldberg staunchly disagreed, comparing Dash’s incident to the threats made against Bristol Palin. “In America, where we all live,” Goldberg said, “we have the right to say, ‘Listen, I have a different opinion’ — without having some bonehead sitting in their house talking about, ‘You should be thinking like I think.’ No! That’s not America.”

ABC News relates the story of Jane Horton, whose husband Chris was a combat sniper from the Oklahoma National Guard, killed in an ambush while deployed to Afghanistan in September 2011. Mitt Romney has been talking about the death of Chris Horton during campaign speeches, particularly Jane Horton’s response when the degenerates from the Westboro Baptist Church turned up to protest his funeral: “Chris died for them to be able to protest.” “This is quite a nation we live in,” Romney observes on the stump. “There are some extraordinary people.”

They’ve done it again. The “Bad Lip Reading” team behind those incredible spoofs of Republican primary candidates — Rick Perry‘s “save the pretzel for the gas jets” anyone? — has come out with a “bad” (read: hilarious) lip reading of Wednesday night’s first presidential debate. In this lip reading, GOP candidate Mitt Romney continually tries to impress moderator Jim Lehrer with his slightly “pitchy, but good stuff” ad lib songwriting, while President Barack Obama (who is now known as “Ahmed”) fumbles his way through nonsensical rants about a “purple idiot” with “an Irish Labradoodle puppy.”

Poynter.org reported moments ago that Mitchell's boss, NBC News President Steve Capus, called both presidential candidates "lazy" on Monday (video follows with partial transcript and commentary): Monday night, at the Edward R. Murrow Awards ceremony, NBC News President Steve Capus asked both campaigns to stop using clips from newscasts in their ads. Capus said:

Paul D. Ryan was plucked from Congress to be Mitt Romney's running mate largely on his reputation as the wonkish and charismatic House Budget Committee chairman, but under the evening sun at the county fairgrounds he was debating beer. And ribs. And a regional favorite called Five Way, which is chili over spaghetti noodles topped with cheese, onions and beans. The architect of the Republican Party's tough-love economic platform has proved particularly adept on the campaign trail with another aspect of political life: courting voters with an appealing enthusiasm, while sometimes skimming past thorny budget details.

"The Illegal-Donor Loophole" is the headline of a Daily Beast story by Peter Schweizer of the conservative Government Accountability Institute and Peter Boyer, former reporter at the New Yorker and the New York Times. The article tells how Obama.com, a website owned by an Obama fundraiser who lives in China but has visited the Obama White House 11 times, sends solicitations mostly to foreign email addresses and links to the Obama campaign website's donation page. The Obama website, unlike those of most campaigns, doesn't ask for the three- or four-digit credit card verification number.

Under the Obama administration, the FDA has opted not to crack down on compounding pharmacies that are mass-producing cheaper drugs under less scrutiny than heavily regulated pharmaceuticals as part of a push to reduce health costs, a former top Bush-era FDA official told the Herald. “The administration made the decision that having access to cheap drugs is more important than the assurances of safety and efficacy from the FDA,” said Sheldon Bradshaw, the FDA’s senior legal counsel in the George W. Bush administration who now works as a Washington lawyer representing corporations regulated by the FDA.

ABC News confirmed on Wednesday that President Obama was a guest at the 1991 wedding of ABC senior foreign affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz, who is set to moderate the vice presidential debate on Thursday night. The news, which was first reported by the conservative website The Daily Caller, prompted howls of disapproval from conservatives, who questioned whether Raddatz will be a neutral moderator. In a statement, an ABC spokesman called accusations that Raddatz has a conflict of interest "absurd." There is no evidence that Obama and Raddatz are close, but the president is friends with her now-ex-husband, Julius Genachowski.
