Al-Qaida is rebuilding in Iraq and has set up training camps for insurgents in the nation's western deserts as the extremist group seizes on regional instability and government security failures to regain strength, officials say. Iraq has seen a jump in al-Qaida attacks over the last 10 weeks, and officials believe most of the fighters are former prisoners who have either escaped from jail or were released by Iraqi authorities for lack of evidence after the U.S. military withdrawal last December. Many are said to be Saudi or from Sunni-dominated Gulf states. During the war and its aftermath,

With new polls showing his campaign gaining momentum, Mitt Romney is venturing into what might be viewed as unfriendly territory, visiting counties in swing states that voted for President Barack Obama in 2008 and urging the president's supporters to switch sides. The strategy is crucial to the Republican nominee: With the pool of undecided voters now small, Mr. Romney's best path to building a majority includes stripping Mr. Obama of some of his more tentative supporters. (Snip) Mr. Romney campaigned last weekend in three counties in Florida that Mr. Obama carried in 2008. On Monday, he stumped in Newport News,

Last night, President Obama defiantly declared that "al Qaeda is on its heels." The president made this claim at a fundraiser at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California. "Now, four years ago, I made a few commitments to you. I told you I’d end the war in Iraq, and I did. I said I’d end the war in Afghanistan, and we are," said Obama. "I said we’d refocus on the people who actually attacked us on 9/11 -- and today, al Qaeda is on its heels and Osama bin Laden is no more." The extraordinary

Vice President Joe Biden’s debate with Republican rival Paul Ryan will be dominated by questions about abortion and contraception if the American Civil Liberties Union’s attempts to pressure the debate moderator succeed. “[N]o topic needs to be discussed more than where the candidates stand on women’s access to reproductive healthcare,” the ACLU writes in an email to supporters. “Tell Martha Raddatz, the debate moderator, to make sure a woman’s right to make her own personal and private decisions isn’t ignored when Joe Biden and Paul Ryan debate.” The hook for the ACLU is that the topic

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (CBS SEATTLE) – Another controversy involving homosexuality is shaking the Boy Scouts of America. New allegations are coming from Ryan Andresen, a scout for the past 12 years who is claiming his homosexuality is preventing him from participating in the BSA. In July, the organization announced that it plans to continue its ban on gay membership after a two-year review of the divisive policy. Ryan is claiming that, despite more than a decade of service in the scouts, he is being denied the group’s highest honor — the Eagle Award — because he is gay.

If you have doubts about the official jobless rate, there's another rate you can check out instead--the "real" unemployment rate, which measures everybody considered unemployed plus a lot of others who are falling through the cracks. The government calls this the "U-6" rate, and it has become a source of considerable intrigue lately. Some critics of President Obama contend that the government keeps the "real" rate a secret, because it reveals an economy that's in far worse shape than the official unemployment rate suggests. (Snip) But the government's own U-6 measure is even higher, at 14.7 percent. That's the percentage

A small piece of NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has apparently fallen off into the Red Planet dirt, scientists announced today (Oct. 9). Curiosity team members spotted the odd bright object on Sunday (Oct. 7) while studying photos of the rover's first Martian soil-scooping activity. Curiosity then spent much of Monday photographing the scrap further, allowing researchers to determine that it likely came off the 1-ton rover — though they're still not sure what exactly it is, or if its absence will affect Curiosity's mission appreciably. "The rover team's assessment is that the bright object is something from the rover, not

Prior to the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi late in the evening on Sept. 11, there was no protest outside the compound, a senior State Department official confirmed today, contradicting initial administration statements suggesting that the attack was an opportunistic reaction to unrest caused by an anti-Islam video. In a conference call with reporters Tuesday, two senior State Department officials gave a detailed accounting of the events that lead to the death of Amb. Chris Stevens and three other Americans. The officials said that prior to the massive attack on the Benghazi compound by dozens of

President Barack Obama told donors in San Francisco Monday that they should be proud of the progress made in the last four years, having referred to the unemployment rate dropping to the same point it was when he took office in January 2009. “We’ve got to look back at the progress we’ve made, and that should give us confidence,” Obama told the audience at the Bill Graham Auditorium in San Francisco. “But we have to understand we’ve got a lot more to do, and if we don’t do it, then change won’t happen.” Obama talked about several aspects

At the same time Team Obama released a childish ad hitting Mitt Romney for daring to consider removing multimillionaire, one-percenter Big Bird from the federal government welfare rolls, the Romney campaign released a devastating graphic that shows that since his debate debacle, Barack Obama has mention Big Bird and Elmo 13 times but has not mentioned Libya or his plan to fix the economy even once. A media that is obviously disappointed with Their Precious One's debate performance and recent collapse in the polls, is not at all happy with this silly and stupid Big Bird attack.

With a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) report highlighting the threat of foreign online campaign donations making a buzz throughout the Beltway, Breitbart News has discovered blog entries on President Obama’s official website that highlight the pervasiveness of the problem. Just last week, a Canadian woman writing on President Obama’s official campaign website claims she made a campaign donation to the Obama campaign during the last election and that she intends to do so this time as well—a clear violation of U.S. election laws: “I had donated to the original campaign and will again,” she writes.

When Joe Biden meets Paul Ryan in Kentucky this week, it will be the 19th time in his political career on stage at either a presidential or vice presidential debate. That’s a fact the Romney campaign is stressing ahead of Thursday’s showdown at Centre College because it will be the first time Ryan, the Wisconsin congressman, has debated at that level. “This is Congressman Ryan’s first time on this big stage, so we’re taking preparation seriously,” Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck said Tuesday in a statement to The Daily Caller. While it’s very typical for campaigns to talk up the great

Could "liar, liar" backfire? The Obama campaign's feverish bid to cast Mitt Romney as "dishonest" on his tax-plan claims is running into headwinds ahead of the vital second presidential debate. Fact-checkers have been heavily scrutinizing the Obama campaign's logic. One economist chided the team for using his research to claim Romney's pushing a middle-class tax hike. And Republicans claim the "liar, liar" strategy is a sign of desperation after a tough debate, with just four weeks left on the clock until Election Day.

Activists from environmental rights group Greenpeace managed to break into restricted areas of nuclear power plants Forsmark on the east coast of Sweden and Ringhals in the south. “The fact that we got this far shows a completely insufficient security,” said Annika Jacobsson, head of Greenpeace Sweden, to news agency TT. Greenpeace calls the action a “peaceful stress-test” to draw attention to the lack of security at the plants. Sen. Charles Schumer (D., N.Y.) cited Tuesday an “impartial” Congressional Research Service report that says tax cuts on high earners and small businesses have little to no effect on economic growth–a report authored by a campaign donor to President Obama. Schumer, speaking at the National Press Club on Tuesday about tax reform, used the report as a counter to Republican arguments for preserving the Bush tax rates: (Snip) The Washington Free Beacon reported last month that the report’s author, Thomas L. Hungerford, has donated at least $3,400 to Obama and at least $2,450 to Democratic candidates and committees since 2008.

Mitt Romney edged President Obama in Gallup’s first national survey of likely voters in the 2012 race, released Tuesday. Romney took 49 percent support against Obama at 47 percent. Among registered voters, which Gallup has been tracking all year, Obama maintains an advantage of 3 percentage points over Romney, 49 to 46 percent. (Snip) Many believe surveys of likely voters are more accurate than those that only survey registered voters. However, Gallup noted that sometimes, as in 2008, “there was only a marginal difference between the vote choices of registered voters and likely voters,” while other times, as in 1996,

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi blasted House Republicans Tuesday for requesting a hearing next week on the State Department's handling of last month's deadly consulate attack in Libya. With Congress in recess for the campaign season, Pelosi argued on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" that if the GOP wants to look into the Libya issue, they should return for votes on other pending legislation, as well. Athens - Greek police fired teargas and stun grenades at protesters in central Athens on Tuesday when they tried to break through a barrier and reach visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Tens of thousands of demonstrators defied a ban on protests, gathering in Syntagma square to voice their displeasure with the German leader, who many blame for forcing painful cuts on Greece in exchange for two EU-IMF bailout packages worth over 200 billion euros. In the central square next to parliament, four people dressed in German military uniforms and riding on a small jeep, waved black-white-and-red swastika flags and stuck

Has President Barack Obama walked into a Big Bird trap? The president has had no shortage of fun over the past week with Republican Mitt Romney’s evocation of the Sesame Street favorite in their first debate. The president has played on Romney’s words about cutting federal funding for the Public Broadcasting Service despite his own fondness for PBS — “I love Big Bird,” Romney said. The Obama campaign has even cut a TV ad with a cameo appearance by Big Bird.

Watching liberals unravel after last week's presidential debate has been almost as entertaining as witnessing the thumping that Republican candidate Mitt Romney applied to the Democratic incumbent Barack Obama. (Snip) It shows Obama's fatal flaw is not just his policies (as bad as they are), but the fact that he isn't and never was cut out to be president. He's not up to it. He's the kid who got thrown into the pool without knowing how to swim. He lacks the experience, composure and certain qualities of leadership required of a president — qualities that Romney put on display.
