Princeton, N.J. - Mitt Romney holds a slight edge over Barack Obama -- 49% to 47% -- in Gallup's initial "likely voter" estimate, encompassing interviews from Oct. 2-8. Preferences tilt the opposite way among registered voters, 49% vs. 46% in Obama's favor. Neither result provides a candidate with a statistically significant lead, but together they do underscore the competitive nature of the election and indicate that Romney at this point benefits from turnout patterns, given the five-point swing in his favor when the transition is made from registered voters to likely voters. As is almost always the case in recent

When President Barack Obama stepped off the stage in Denver last week the 60 million Americans watching the debate against Mitt Romney already knew it had been a disaster for him. But what nobody knew, until now, was that Obama believed he had actually won. In an extraordinary insight into the events leading up to the 90 minute showdown which changed the face of the election, a Democrat close to the Obama campaign today reveals that the President also did not take his debate preparation seriously,

When Swedish sixth grader Tilde Nörgaard opened her recently-delivered school class photo album, she was shocked to discover her picture showed with one eye too many. “First everyone was laughing, Tilde too, because we thought it was funny,” Tilde’s sister Anna told The Local. “But then we noticed it made her sad and we realized it was actually quite bad that they never noticed the mistake.” (Snip) The photography company responsible for the catalogue, Skolfoto Norden, had "no good explanation" for the apparent case of wayward digital manipulation took place.

Iraq has signed contracts to buy Russian arms worth $4.2bn (£2.6bn; 3.2bn euros) this year, Russian news agencies report. Moscow, the main supplier of arms to Iraq under Saddam Hussein, thus becomes the country's second-biggest arms supplier after the US. The new contracts were announced after talks between the two countries' prime ministers near Moscow on Tuesday. (Snip) Thirty Mi-28 attack helicopters and 42 Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile systems are said to be among items being sold. Further discussions are said to be under way for Iraq eventually to buy MiG-29 jets, heavy armoured vehicles and other weaponry.

The global economic recovery is weakening as government policies have failed to restore confidence, the International Monetary Fund has said. It added that the risk of further deterioration in the economic outlook was "considerable" and had increased. The IMF downgraded its estimate for global growth in 2013 to 3.6% from the 3.9% it forecast in July. (Snip) In response to the downgrade, the UK Treasury highlighted the fact that the IMF had "repeated its advice that the first line of defence against [slowing growth] should be to allow the automatic stabilisers to operate, monetary policy easing and measures to ease

The pressure to "reset" the presidential race is on President Obama's team this time around. With a variety of new polls showing Mitt Romney's riding the wave of his post-debate surge to a near deadlock among likely voters, the Obama campaign is looking for ways to break the challenger's rising tide. And Vice President Joe Biden is lining up as the man to do it. "The Obama campaign has lost all the momentum they had and now are in danger of falling behind," ABC News political analyst and former George W. Bush campaign strategist Matthew Dowd said this morning. "Biden

Republicans are poised to flex their financial muscle in the final month leading up to the election, dumping an avalanche of cash into congressional races in an attempt to protect the House GOP majority. Politico has learned that two leading Republican groups, American Action Network and the Congressional Leadership Fund, are teaming up to spend nearly $13.5 million in House battles across the country. The investment has the potential to drastically alter a financial playing field that has been mostly even between the two parties. Between the beginning of July and the end of September, Republican groups held a $36

A groundbreaking report published Monday raises startling questions about the Obama campaign’s potentially illegal practice of accepting and soliciting online donations from foreign nationals, experts say. At the very least, the report—which found that the Obama campaign likely pays millions more in additional fees to avoid using standard verification methods for online credit card donations—exposes the true record of a president who has repeatedly denounced the alleged influence of foreign funds in U.S. elections. (Snip) Federal campaign law prohibits U.S. political campaigns from knowingly accepting or soliciting donations from foreign nationals.

A conservative radio host based in central Virginia, has posted a video on his website of a GOP office with its window smashed in, expletive-laced rants presumably delivered at Republicans, and Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan signs torn down, defaced and smeared with what appears to be human excrement. The clip (prefaced with a warning of "extremely graphic content") on the "Schilling Show" blog, written by radio host Rob Schilling, begins with President Obama on the campaign trail telling attendees to "argue with them and get in their face," a phrase he used in 2008 to encourage his supporters

President Obama’s campaign attacked Mitt Romney with an ad over a Bain Capital affiliate’s investment in “a company called Global Tech [that] maximized profits by paying its workers next to nothing under sweatshop conditions in China.” But Global Tech has other investors — and as it happens, one of them is a top Obama advisor, fundraiser, and golf buddy. ABC News observed “that there is no evidence Romney had an active role in sending any American jobs to China or in approving the specific investment in Global Tech.” Now meet Robert Wolf, who was president of UBS Investment Bank until

The good news in today's ARG poll of Ohio is not that Romney's leading 48-47%, it's that the party ID breakdown doesn't reflect anything nearing reality. There's just no way Democrats will enjoy a nine-point turnout advantage over Romney in Ohio. But in order to believe Romney's only up by one, that's exactly what you have to assume. Here's the ARG sample: Democrats (42%) Republicans (33%) Independents (25%) The poll also shows Romney is also winning Independents by a full 20 points, 57-37%. Romney's winning men by four points, 50-46%, and only losing women by three, 48-45%. But Romney's only

Other than Mitt Romney, the only man who can plausibly derail President Barack Obama’s re-election is Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose policy of “pre-emption” makes an Israeli military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities only a matter of time. And, when that occurs, a disruption of Middle East oil production and shipments, a spiking of domestic U.S. gas prices, and a renewal of Islamic terrorist attacks will also be just a matter of time. Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in a late September address to the United Nations, said that his country would hold the United States responsible for any Israeli

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Businesses affiliated with the husband of Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill have received almost $40 million in federal subsidies for low-income housing developments during her first five years in office, though it appears only fraction of that has made it to the family's bank accounts, according to an Associated Press analysis. President Obama teased Mitt Romney last week when the Republican challenger called for regular meetings with congressional leaders. The president noted Romney's call to repeal "ObamaCare" wouldn't sit too well with Democratic participants. But the president's skepticism toward meetings with lawmakers -- particularly at the height of an election year -- is reflected not just on the debate stage, but in his schedule in Washington. Over the past six months, the president has held just one formal meeting with the top four congressional leaders. Since the beginning of the year, he's held two.

Islamabad - A waterborne parasite commonly known as "brain-eating amoeba" has killed 10 people in Pakistan's largest city, a Pakistani official with the World Health Organization said Tuesday. The amoeba — Naegleria fowleri — lives in warm, unclean water. It can infect the human nervous system, though this occurs rarely. In those cases it is difficult to treat and can lead to death in about a week. Musa Khan, in charge of WHO's Disease Early Warning System in Pakistan, said the deaths were reported in the city of Karachi from March to September.

US Senator Scott Brown has regained a lead over Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren in a new WBUR-MassINC poll, after a string of polls showed Warren with the lead. The poll is the first since Brown and Warren’s second debate at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Oct. 1. The telephone poll of 502 likely voters, taken Oct. 5 through Oct. 7, showed Brown leading 47 percent to 43 percent, within the 4.4 percent margin of error. The lead drops to 3 percentage points — 48 percent to 45 percent — with the inclusion of respondents who say they have not

Rural Van Meter, Ia. – Mitt Romney unleashed a rapid-fire critique of President Barack Obama’s farm policies and revealed personal stories so-far unheard on the Iowa campaign trail at a brief and windswept campaign appearance this afternoon. Romney, the Republican presidential nominee, spoke for about 16 minutes to a crowd of more than 1,200 on a century farm in northern Madison County, south and west of the Des Moines metro. In his more substantive policy remarks, Romney hit Obama, the incumbent Democrat, repeatedly on issues of interest to the farming and agriculture communities, including the estate tax, exports and regulations.

Of all the unfavorable national polling that has piled up for Barack Obama since his consensus debate loss against Mitt Romney, two new polls from previously safe blue states should cause even more concern for the president. (Snip) The Siena poll was the first non-partisan survey of the state since the debate, and it shows Obama's lead tightening significantly from a CBS/New York Times/Quinnipiac poll three weeks ago that put Obama in a 12-point lead. Joe Biden was a bit of a weenie in high school, but the star halfback got the girls, as halfbacks nearly always do. Paul Ryan was a high-school nerd but he got to drive the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Both men have moved on since then, though few of us outlive high school, and Thursday night they collide in a crucial debate at tiny Centre College in Kentucky. Nobody actually votes for a vice president, but this time the veep debate is crucial. If Mr. Ryan “wins,” he’ll keep up the undeniable momentum of the Republican campaign. Link added by staff.

In Mitt Romney's "Hope Is Not a Strategy" speech at the Virginia Military Institute, the Republican challenger zeroed in on the current unrest in the Middle East as a sign that President Barack Obama's foreign policy is not working.
