For months, Ann Romney and her eldest son, Tagg, were dutifully supportive of the political professionals running Mitt Romney’s campaign. All the while, their private frustration was mounting. Shortly before the final debate, it finally boiled over. What followed was a family intervention. The candidate’s family prevailed on Mitt Romney, and the campaign operation, to shake things up dramatically, according to campaign insiders. The family pushed for a new message, putting an emphasis on a softer and more moderate image for the GOP nominee — a “let Mitt be Mitt” approach

Following his boffo debate on domestic affairs, Mitt Romney turned to foreign policy Monday in a major speech at the Virginia Military Institute. "America's security and the cause of freedom," he said, "cannot afford four more years like the last four years." The speech is an important moment as a window on Mr. Romney's principles and instincts as Commander in Chief. Within half an hour of delivery, President Obama's surrogates were portraying the Republican as erratic, uninformed and dangerous—supposedly George W. Bush with better diction.

For years now, the American people have been told by the liberal media and other establishment figures about President Obama's superior intellect. We have been repeatedly told that Obama is "the smartest person in the room." Naturally, most conservatives never bought into this myth. What with, among other things, his declaration he had visited "57 states with one to go," his reference to the "Austrian language" not to mention his inability to discern the Maldives from the Malvinas. As Bret Stephens wrote in the Wall Street Journal in August 2011, "I just think the president isn't very bright." Stephens concluded,

In the most immediate way, the current wave of Democratic panic is probably overblown. If you want to understand why Mitt Romney’s current polling bounce is probably not a fundamental reshaping of the race, read Nate Silver and Nate Cohn, but I’ll summarize it for you. Polls have very low response rates. Sometimes short-term events that dominate the news cycle excite partisans and make them more likely to answer pollsters — it happened when Romney picked Paul Ryan — but they don't reflect a deep remaking of the public opinion landscape, which remains fairly settled.

Last week's presidential debate revealed one area of agreement between the candidates: We need more teachers. "Let's hire another hundred thousand math and science teachers," proposed President Obama, adding that "Governor Romney doesn't think we need more teachers." Mr. Romney quickly replied, "I reject the idea that I don't believe in great teachers or more teachers." He just opposes earmarking federal dollars for this purpose, believing instead that "every school district, every state should make that decision on their own." Let's hope state and local officials have that discretion—and choose to shrink the teacher labor force rather than expand it.

A book about presidential perks recently revealed that taxpayers spend about $1.4 billion paying for the staffing, housing, transportation and entertaining of President Barack Obama’s White House. Now another author, John F. Groom, explains in “The 1.4 Billion Dollar Man: Costs of the Obama White House” exactly how researchers came up with that $1.4 billion estimate. “One of the most important things to note about the $1.4 billion figure is that it specifically does NOT include the cost of running the White House’s policy operations – the $1.4 billion is money that is directly related

Mitt Romney has done it now. He has attacked the Left where it lives -- on PBS and NPR. Mass-attending Catholics rightly perceive that President Obama launched a direct attack on their church. Their bishops have informed them. Evangelicals and other people of faith have mobilized to support Catholics against the Obamacare regulations that will oblige Catholic hospitals, schools and human welfare agencies to close rather than provide the morning-after pill, sterilization, and other drugs and procedures prohibited by Catholic doctrine. Catholics are angry, and they will vote that anger in key swing states

In one of the clearest signs yet that Jose Antonio Vargas won't be deported from the U.S., Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a statement on why it didn't take action against the journalist, activist and undocumented immigrant after he was arrested on Friday in Minneapolis for driving without a license. “Mr. Vargas was not arrested by ICE, nor did the agency issue a detainer,” ICE spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said in a statement to Politico. “ICE is focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that prioritizes the removal of public safety threats, recent border crossers and egregious immigration law violators,

Credit President Barack Obama’s aides with discernment. Even before the first presidential debate was over, they knew they needed to come up with an excuse, and fast. They settled on one that they haven’t stopped repeating: Mitt Romney lied his way to victory. The president would have rebutted Romney’s gross deceptions, except he was too focused on answering questions about the country’s future and too taken aback by Romney’s brazenness to answer the former governor in real time. Although once he had a day or two and his witty rejoinders

While the six-hour visit is designed as a show of support for Greece by its largest financial backer, it has also revived calls for reparations for the damage done by Nazi Germany's occupation of the country in the Second World War. Greece's economy has shrunk by one quarter in five years and the government has lurched from one bankruptcy crisis to a next with tens of thousands regularly marching the streets to protests at EU demanded austerity cuts. Many in Greece see these cuts are seen as being driven by Berlin and fears for Mrs Merkel's safety has seen

DENVER — Students in the Denver Public Schools need to know reading, writing and ‘rithmetic, but what about the fourth “r” — revolution? District officials have scrambled to respond to a public outcry over language in the new teacher-assessment criteria that describes a “distinguished” teacher as one who “encourages students to challenge and question the dominant culture” and “take social action to change/improve society or work for social justice.” The district’s “Framework for Effective Teaching” also said teachers would be scored on whether “Spades tudents appear comfortable challenging the dominant

Mark it down on your calendars: Yesterday — Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 — may go down in the annals of history as the day political polling died. It was the most ridiculous polling day among many preposterous polling days in the course of this long campaign. The ludicrous comedy began early in the morning. Gallup reported that, when it combined the results of its three nightly surveys after Wednesday’s debate, the race between Mitt Romney and President Obama had become a tie, 47-47. Around the same time came news from the bipartisan Battleground poll

Mitt Romney traveled to the Virginia Military Institute yesterday — and took just 15 short minutes to shred the Obama-era first-term foreign-policy legacy. It’s “the responsibility of [the] president to use America’s great power to shape history, not to lead from behind, leaving our destiny at the mercy of events,” he said. Russia, China and other powers have hastened to fill the vacuum created by Obama policies, whose guiding principle — if there is one — has been to diminish America’s global footprint. Obama apparently believes this makes for a peaceful world — but four years of growing chaos suggest otherwise.

In May 2009, President Obama released his updated budget estimates, which projected that the federal deficit for fiscal year 2012 would be $557 billion (see table S-1). The Congressional Budget Office now says that the deficit for fiscal year 2012 (which ended on September 30) was about $1.1 trillion — or about twice what Obama said it would be. In other words, Obama’s estimate was off by more than half a trillion dollars. To put this colossal error into perspective, at the time that Obama was elected, the United States had never once had a deficit

Here’s BuzzFeed’s headline on a little story that happened today: Paul Ryan Gets Testy And Ends Interview Here’s the video. BuzzFeed got a couple of things wrong. One – Ryan isn’t “testy.”Two – Ryan didn’t end the interview. Someone off camera did that. Other than that, BuzzFeed and Mediate’s reporting are OK, I guess.Bonus: The reporter’s question was strange, as Ryan said. The interview was about reducing crime, and Ryan offered up some solutions including bringing economic opportunity to inner city neighborhoods where crime is rampant. After a few questions about guns, the reporter tries a curve

The House Blue Dog Coalition, still reeling from 2010 elections that cut its ranks in half, looks likely to sustain additional losses this year that would cast doubt on the group’s influence in the 113th Congress. The number of Blue Dogs grew steadily beginning in 1997, peaking at 54 members in the 111th Congress, when the fiscally conservative Democrats reached the pinnacle of their influence during the health care debate. That may have also been the coalition’s undoing: The unforgiving tea party wave of 2010 and opposition to President Barack Obama’s health care law decimated the ranks.

Poker star Phil Ivey's $11.5 million gambling win: Was it Banco--or bunko? That's the question being asked in London, as authorities try to determine if trickery or cheating played any role in the American poker pro's fabulous winning streak at a game called Punto Banco. Punto Banco--a variant of baccarat--is similar to Chemin de Fer (James Bond's preferred card game), according to London's Daily Mail, which describes it as a high-stakes game favored by high-rollers. Lance Bradley, editor in chief of poker magazine Bluff, calls Punto Banco a game in which skill plays no role whatsoever:

In case there was any lingering shred of doubt that Romney helped himself considerably last week, this ought to finish it off. Michigan: Obama’s 10 percentage point lead (47%-37%) in a poll conducted last month by EPIC-MRA of Lansing dropped to 3 points (48% to 45%), according to the poll of 600 likely voters conducted by EPIC-MRA of Lansing. The gap between Romney and Obama was within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points… “Romney has come back like gangbusters,” said EPIC-MRA President Bernie Porn.

Bioethics: British and Japanese researchers have been awarded this year's Nobel Prize for showing how to create embryonic stem cells without using human embryos in a genuinely promising line of research For decades now, embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) has been trumpeted as the most promising avenue of research, and those who had moral qualms about using human embryos were dismissed as Bible-thumping troglodytes who stood in the way of making the lame walk ESCR supporters said their way led to finding "imminent" miracle cures to tragic and sometimes deadly conditions and diseases

“Mission Im-Boris-ible” screamed the logo on the screen above the stage. Footage unfolded of a blond-mopped cyclist wobbling across the streets of London. Cut to a similarly figure dangling from a stuck zipwire, kicking his legs helplessly like a baby in a harness. No other politician would choose to enter their party conference like this. The idea of tonight's so-called “Boris rally” at the Tory conference was to celebrate his victory in the mayoral election, although at times it felt curiously like a celebration of his victory in some future general election. But perhaps it’s best just to think of

In the 2012 campaign, Vice President Biden has become cheerleader in chief for the operation that killed Osama bin Laden, while claiming that Mitt Romney would not have ordered the mission — which, in Biden’s telling, disqualifies Romney for the presidency. One problem with that: Joe Biden opposed the mission that killed Osama bin Laden. During his speech at the Democratic National Convention, Biden lavished praise on President Obama for the bin Laden raid: “Barack understood that the search for bin Laden was about a lot more than taking a monstrous leader off the battlefield; it was about righting

Mitt Romney's much-briefed foreign policy speech yesterday was a brilliant piece of sleight of hand. As with his debate performance on domestic policy last week, its main purpose was to position him against the whackier fringes of his party as a classically guided centre-Right Republican--internationalist, pro-free trade, and pragmatic--rather than to take on President Obama's policies. To see this, you only really have to look at one phrase: "I will deepen our critical cooperation with our partners in the Gulf." Who are America's partners in the Gulf? Well, the ones he means are Saudi Arabia, provider of American oil, Qatar,

In February 2001, Julieanna Richardson, as part of an oral history on black Americans called "History Makers," interviewed Barack Obama at length. Although the 10,000-plus-word interview offers no Eureka moments, it does help demystify Obama's debate failure and deepens the doubt that he uniquely authored his own memoir, Dreams from My Father. Kudos to attorney Barron Sawyer for bringing this interview to light. Richardson seems to capture the 39-year-old state senator as he was -- cautious, ambitious, and more than a little vain.

Debris from last year's Japanese tsunami has already started landing on the West coast of the United States, and people living in Oregon are bracing themselves for more in the next few weeks, when the winter storms begin. The early mist over Yaquina Bay in Oregon is beginning to burn off as 25 volunteers gather to clean up the beach. The wind shapes the sand into dunes and debris can often be found collected at the base of these.[Snip] "I've walked the beaches and see the trash that washes up anyway in the winter time so I have no idea
