San Francisco - President Barack Obama encouraged supporters on Monday to be "obsessive" about working for his re-election in the final weeks of the campaign, declaring himself confident that he would win on November 6. Polls have narrowed in the race between the Democratic incumbent and Republican rival Mitt Romney since their debate last week, which most observers said the former Massachusetts governor won handily. During a fundraising trip in California, the president sought to reassure his supporters about his chances, despite his debate performance. "I am pretty competitive, and I very much intend to win this election," he said

For the first time in its history, the United States does not have a Protestant majority, a new study shows. One reason is that the number of US citizens with no religious affiliation is on the rise. The percentage of Protestant adults in the US has reached a low of 48 per cent, the first time Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life has reported with certainty that the number has fallen below 50 per cent. (Snip) The Pew study, released on Tuesday, found about 20 per cent of Americans say they have no religious affiliation, an increase from 15

In 1926 my father, aged 19, left an Aberdeenshire farm to be a rubber planter in Malaya. Apart from a year back home after enduring a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp, he didn’t return to live in Scotland until he was almost 70. He was dismayed by what he found. It seemed to him that the Scots were no longer the hard-working, energetic and self-reliant people they had been in his youth. Instead they were given to self-pity and the belief that the world owed them a living and the state would provide. There were exceptions, of course. The oil-rich north-east was

Washington - U.S. vice presidential debates usually don't matter much, but the October 11 showdown between Democratic incumbent Joe Biden and Republican challenger Paul Ryan could be an exception. Democrats are counting on Biden to blunt the momentum of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney (Snip) Biden and Ryan have shown a greater willingness to mix it up than their buttoned-down bosses, and both seem comfortable playing the traditional vice-presidential role of attack dog "I'd be surprised if there weren't far more fireworks in this debate than there were in the first presidential debate," said University of Maine political science professor

Seoul, South Korea - North Korea says South Korea, Japan, Guam and the U.S. mainland are within range of its missiles. An unidentified spokesman at the North's powerful National Defense Commission issued the statement Tuesday in response to South Korea's recent announcement that the U.S. agreed to let it have longer-range missiles capable of hitting all of North Korea. It's unusual for North Korea to say its missiles are capable of striking the U.S., but the country has regularly issued harsh rhetoric against Seoul and Washington.

When President Barack Obama and others on the left are not busy admonishing the rest of us to be "civil" in our discussions of political issues, they are busy letting loose insults, accusations and smears against those who dare to disagree with them. Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign is diverting substantial resources from Pennsylvania to Ohio, according to a knowledgeable campaign source who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. Field staff for the campaign were told about the decision during a conference call late Monday, the source said. Instructions were not sent via email to avoid leaks to the media. A Romney official denied to The Daily Caller that the campaign was moving out of Pennsylvania entirely, but confirmed that some of the state’s staff were headed to Ohio — a state every Republican president has won on the

The much-watched launch of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket had one little setback that was overlooked by many in the excitement of the moment. It lost an engine during ascent. SpaceX said that "panels designed to relieve pressure within the engine bay" were what was jettisoned. (Snip) "Falcon 9 did exactly what it was designed

A preliminary decision by the Commerce Department to drop a 1996 trade agreement with Mexico over Mexican tomato exports is the latest in a string of trade policy decisions handed down by the Obama administration that will benefit key swing states in the 2012 election. People who protect their homes and families against intruders should not be treated like criminals. Five years ago, the then Justice Secretary Jack Straw promised to review the law on self-defence to strengthen the protection for home owners if they fought back against intruders.[Snip] Politicians have promised much in this area over the years and delivered little. Los Angeles - NASA officials say the Curiosity rover has made its first scoop of the surface of planet Mars and has detected a bright object on the ground. Officials said in a news release Monday that they suspect the object might be a part of the six-wheeled rover, but they won't sample or scoop anymore until they figure out what it is. The Curiosity has already beamed back pictures of bedrock that suggest a fast-moving stream once flowed on the planet. The rover landed Aug. 5 and is on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether microbial life

Romney delivered a big speech on foreign policy on Monday at the Virginia Military Institute. This is Mitt trying to do his vision thing, including a pledge to make the 21st century “an American century.” The rest of the world might have something to say about that, but then Romney isn’t chasing Assad or Ahmadinejad’s votes (and Chavez is already committed to Obama…) There’s much to critique about this speech. The image it creates of Obama’s foreign policy suggests that the President is a dolphin hugging, French speaking neo-hippie. In fact, this administration has stated

Powered by his widely-acclaimed debate performance last week, Mitt Romney has closed a 9 percentage-point gap and is once again tied with President Obama in the latest The Washington Times/Zogby Poll conducted by Zogby Analytics, released Monday. Likely voters who watched Wednesday’s debate overwhelmingly scored it a win for Mr. Romney, 65 percent to 14 percent for Mr. Obama, and among independents it was even worse for the president — only 8 percent said he triumphed. The poll showed Mr. Romney turning the gender gap

Voters now give Mitt Romney the nod when it comes to handling national security, and he has recaptured a lead over President Obama when voters are asked who will do a better job on the economy — findings that spell bad news for the incumbent. Little more than a week ago, heading into the first debate of the campaign season, Mr. Obama led on the economy and national security, as well as handling of energy, immigration and foreign affairs. In each of those categories he either topped or was just below the magic number of 50 percent support.

TRIPOLI, Libya — The Obama administration is confronting a legal and policy dilemma that could reshape how it pursues terrorism suspects around the world as investigators try to determine who was responsible for the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi. Should it rely on the FBI, treating the assaults on the two U.S. compounds like a regular crime for prosecution in U.S. courts? Can it depend on the dysfunctional Libyan government to take action? Or should it embrace a military option by ordering a drone strike — or sending more prisoners to Guantanamo Bay?

LEXINGTON, Va. — Mitt Romney delivered a broad critique of President Obama’s foreign policy record on Monday, as a new national poll showed a surge by the Republican challenger that put him even with and perhaps ahead of the incumbent with a month to go before the election. Romney focused most of his criticism on Obama’s approach to the Middle East, saying that a withering of American resolve in the region has made it a more dangerous place than it was when the president took office nearly four years ago. “Hope,” he said, “is not a strategy.’’

Mitt Romney looked the part of commander in chief. In a crisply delivered speech before a bevy of flags at the Virginia Military Institute he looked, as the campaign planned, as if he might already be the president. The speech, as expected, was an indictment of Obama’s failed leadership. Romney highlighted the career of George Marshall, a VMI graduate. (“General Marshall once said, ‘The only way human beings can win a war is to prevent it.’ Those words were true in his time — and they still echo in ours.”) The focus on Libya was both effective and pronounced

As John’s earlier post points out, there’s a revealing paragraph in today’s New York Times article on Obama’s dismal debate performance: Mr. Obama does not like debates to begin with, aides have long said, viewing them as media-driven gamesmanship. He did not do all that well in 2008 but benefited from Senator John McCain’s grumpy performances. Mr. Obama made clear to advisers that he was not happy about debating Mr. Romney, whom he views with disdain. It was something to endure, rather than an opportunity, aides said. Notice that it’s Romney himself who Obama
