Conservative Party conference
hit by Borismania

The Mayor of London blew into its conference in Birmingham, a hurricane of blond hair, media attention and other people’s speculation about his prospects of one day taking David Cameron’s job. His reception – in a city not noted for its Tory support – was more suited to a rock star than a politician, with crowds of passengers chanting his name at New Street station. At the conference centre, he was surrounded by a scrum of cameramen and photographers so intense that one was thrown to the floor and required medical attention.

The long campaign to give householders the right to use maximum force against burglars will end in victory today. Chris Grayling will announce he is changing the law to allow people to use ‘disproportionate’ levels of violence to protect themselves and their families. The Justice Secretary said it would ‘dispel doubts once and for all’ over the right to fight back against intruders. The new rules could, in some cases, allow for lethal force. The move is designed to remove the threat of a burglary victim being arrested – let alone charged – if they use violence to

Voter registration down

Voter registration is down in Chicago and Cook County compared with four years ago, but has increased slightly in most of the suburban collar counties. The numbers from county to county may differ, but election officials agree on a few observations in advance of Tuesday's voter registration deadline: They don't expect the same unprecedented flood of last-minute registration forms as in 2008. They haven't seen teams of campaign workers scavenging for every last unregistered voter. And they don't sense the same level of sheer enthusiasm from voters. It's nothing like four years ago,"

The professional core of the U.S. military overwhelmingly favors Mitt Romney over President Obama in the upcoming election — but not because of any particular military issues, according to a new poll of more than 3,100 active and reserve troops. Respondents rated the economy and the candidates’ character as their most important considerations and all but ignored the war in Afghanistan as an issue of concern. Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s strong performance in his first debate with President Barack Obama helped him trim Obama’s lead in Michigan to three percentage points, a poll released Monday to the Detroit Free Press shows. Obama’s 10 percentage point lead (47 percent to 37 percent ) in a poll conducted last month by EPIC-MRA of Lansing dropped to 3 points (48 percent to 45 percent), according to the poll of 600 likely voters conducted by EPIC-MRA of Lansing. The gap between Romney and Obama was within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

In a shocking one-month swing, Mitt Romney stormed into the lead over President Barack Obama in a new Pew Research poll conducted after Romney's consensus victory in the first presidential debate. The poll finds a 11-point swing among likely voters. In Pew's last poll, conducted in the middle of September, Obama led Romney 51-43 among likely voters. Now, Romney leads 49-46. The shift is due to Romney shoring up key areas of strength among likely voters and improving his overall image, much of which can be attributed to his strang debate performance. Sixty-six percent of voters thought

President Obama touted it in 2010 as evidence "manufacturing jobs are coming back to the United States,” but two years later, a Michigan hybrid battery plant built with $150 million in taxpayer funds is putting workers on furlough before a single battery has been produced. Workers at the Compact Power manufacturing facilities in Holland, Mich., run by LG Chem, have been placed on rotating furloughs, working only three weeks per month based on lack of demand for lithium-ion cells. The facility, which was opened in July 2010 with a groundbreaking attended by Obama, has yet to produce a single battery

Mitt Romney won the first presidential debate by a whopping 52-point margin according to Gallup - the most resounding margin since the polling giant began tracking debates 20 years ago. The stunning judgement on the debate came as a bombshell Pew national poll put Romney four points ahead of President Barack Obama by 49 to 45 points - a huge swing of 12 points from mid-September, when Pew found Obama leading by 51 to 43 points. Swanton, Ohio - After three days of intensive debate prep, a crisper Paul Ryan focused on foreign policy emerged today, in lockstep with Mitt Romney on what the GOP challengers for the presidency claim are the Obama administration’s many purported failings overseas. Just minutes after his running mate finished his own foreign policy address, Ryan took the stage at an airplane hangar here and echoed many of the same points Mitt Romney made in his own speech in Virginia. Niagara Falls, On. - The last day of Marineland’s operating season drew hundreds of protesters outside the Niagara tourist attraction’s gates on Sunday and escalated when about 150 people stormed inside, yelling “shut it down.” Organizers said they hadn’t planned to enter the park but set up a demonstration outside in hopes of keeping attention on sea mammal captivity in Canada, even after Marineland shuts down for the winter. The protest, which appeared to draw a crowd of at least 500 at its peak, follows a Star investigation that reported accounts by former trainers who blamed poor water quality and

Mitt Romney’s foreign policy address Monday hammered home his argument that voters should oust an in-over-his-head President Obama. The best response to all that's strange, mysterious or just surprising may be a smile. But the news of late has reduced me to the one-word question and expletive favored by "Mad Men's" Don Draper whenever he's confronted by anything that doesn't make sense: What?! Take the sheer number of fabrications Barack Obama managed to pack into one response to a simple question on CBS' "60 Minutes." To swallow them all would require a boxcar of salt.

WASHINGTON- As the White House race shows signs of tightening nationally, President Barack Obama's campaign is banking on a massive get-out-the-vote operation and state-by-state shades of economic improvement to maintain its apparent polling edge in battlegrounds from Ohio to Virginia. Republican Mitt Romney, re-energized by last week's debate, is flashing new confidence on the campaign trail and pressing toward the political center on both foreign and domestic issues. But aides have outlined no clear path to winning the 270 Electoral College votes required to gain the White House. "Things are going pretty good," the usually cautious Romney

The Obama campaign released news on Saturday morning of a holiday weekend, that it had raised a massive $181 million in September. It's a staggering sum heading into the final month of campaigning. It almost equals his fundraising for July and August combined. But details about Obama's fundraising windfall and a new report this morning from the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) raise troubling questions. Specifically, how much of this fundraising was illegal? GAI found that Obama's donation page doesn't use any industry-standard credit card security measures.

The latest Pew poll showing former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney ahead of President Obama among likely voters has the potential to rapidly re-orient conventional wisdom about the challenger’s chances of winning. Of course, this is a single poll — although Gallup’s latest tracking also shows movement toward Romney since last Wednesday’s debate — and, as such, should be taken cum grano salis. Still, it’s a major shot in the arm for a Romney campaign that 10 days ago was fighting off “Is it all over?” stories. While the topline numbers in the Pew survey are sexy — politically speaking,

Art hardly ever comes up as a campaign issue in presidential elections. But once voters decide, the artistic tastes of the first family become well known from the pieces they choose to adorn the White House. Barack Obama has long taken pride in his artistic interests, taking Michelle to the Art Institute of Chicago on their first date, where he impressed his future wife with his knowledge of both the old masters and modern art. When the couple moved into the White House, they selected bright, sharp, modern abstractions for the most part, from artists such as

In September, the poll found Obama leading Romney among likely voters 51 percent to 43 percent.
