There Is No Hyperinflation In Iran –
The Real Story Is
Much More Interesting
Business Insider, by Matthew Boesler    Original Article

Contrary to reports, there is no hyperinflation in Iran right now at all. In fact, the Western sanctions imposed on Iran's oil trade are failing miserably to meet their objectives. And a regime collapse – or even, coming short of that, another popular uprising reminiscent of June 2009 – seems further away from Iran than ever. Meanwhile, the Iranian regime is using the current sanctions imposed against it by the West as a weapon to weaken its own fiercest domestic threat – the educated, relatively pro-Western Iranian constituency that comprises the middle class.

Coyotes, bears, and lions:
the new urban pioneers?

Atlanta - Americans have been moving from the country to the city for decades, so maybe it’s not surprising that researchers are finding a similar pattern among other North American apex predators. New research suggests mountain lions and bears may be following the urban pioneering of raccoons, foxes and, most notably, coyotes as they slowly encroach on major US metro areas from New Jersey to California. In the case of coyotes, they don’t even mind the density, with some coyote packs now confining themselves to territories of a third of a square mile.

Paris - Police carried out raids across France on Saturday after DNA on a grenade that exploded last month at a kosher grocery story led them to a suspected jihadist cell of young Frenchmen recently converted to Islam. The man whose DNA was identified, named by police as Jeremy Sydney, was killed by police after he opened fire on them, slightly wounding three officers in the eastern city of Strasbourg. Ten other people, aged between 19 and 25, were arrested across the country. One man was carrying a loaded gun, and police found weapons, cash and a list of Paris-area

Lunch lady slammed for

A talented head cook at a school in central Sweden has been told to stop baking fresh bread and to cut back on her wide-ranging veggie buffets because it was unfair that students at other schools didn't have access to the unusually tasty offerings. Annika Eriksson, a lunch lady at school in Falun, was told that her cooking is just too good. Pupils at the school have become accustomed to feasting on newly baked bread and an assortment of 15 vegetables at lunchtime, but now the good times are over. The municipality has ordered Eriksson to bring it down a

Sean Penn campaigns in

It’s no surprise to find actor Sean Penn on the campaign trail these days. The two-time Academy Award winner is a strong backer of President Barack Obama with a history of putting his name and celebrity panache behind left-of-center causes. But what is starting to raise eyebrows among Americans is Penn’s campaign blessings for another friend in another country: Venezuela’s Marxist President Hugo Chavez, who will face the voters of his country Oct. 7 (Snip) The timing of Penn’s appearance to raise funds for Ruiz was particularly interesting, since it occurred days after he had returned from a campaign visit

Andrea Mitchell quizzed Evercore Partners founder Roger Altman about the Wall Street take on the September jobs report and the election in a Friday interview — but failed to disclose he is a bundler for President Obama’s reelection campaign. While Mitchell referred to Altman as a “strong supporter” of Obama, she left out his significant fundraising on the president’s behalf. According to the campaign, Altman has raised between $200,000 and $500,000 for the president’s reelection campaign

The Unemployment Rate

The best news for President Obama is that the unemployment rate has steadily fallen in an election year, and had a big drop today. At a campaign event today, Mitt Romney sought to play down the significance of these numbers. (Snip) In other words, if the Civilian Participation Rate had stayed constant this year, today's level of employment would translate to 8.35 percent unemployment. Last December's unemployment rate was 8.5 percent. So Romney said specifically: The reason it’s come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work The

Thousands of President Obama supporters turned out in in Madison, Wisc., for a rally following Wednesday night’s debate in Denver. The mood was somber, to say the least, as they waited to enter Bascom Mall at the University of Wisconsin Thursday afternoon. University of Wisconsin students and fellow Wisconsinites had mixed reviews on the president's performance. I talked to supporters of the president who had watched the debate, asking how they thought the president did. One after the other said they were left unimpressed and “not inspired,” seemingly depressed and lethargic in their continuing support of the president.

Less than a month ago a United States ambassador and three other Americans were killed during a terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya. For days the Obama administration denied the attacks were terrorist related. Now intelligence figures from within the American government are letting it be known how the Obama White House has repeatedly ignored and then covered up information and events that put the safety and security of the United States in danger. Windfall: Obama Raises

The Obama campaign dropped a bombshell this morning. It announced that, combined with the DNC, the campaign raised a staggering $181 million in September. The windfall is a huge increase over July and August, when the campaign raised around $100 million, although it is slightly down from the $193 million it raised in September 2008. The news should raise eyebrows. The campaign said that just over 1.8 million people made donations to the campaign last month. According to the campaign, over 500k of these were brand-new donors, having neither given in 2008 nor 2012.

As it has happened in the past, Pakistan has been spared the rod by the United States for its international transgressions, this time for its continued patronage of terrorism in the region, in the interest of what Washington believes is American national security. The US state department last month waived legal requirements that made its nearly $ 2 billion annual aid to Pakistan contingent on its cooperation in counter-terrorism, ending nuclear proliferation and building democratic institutions, a Congressional Research Service (CRS) report released recently has revealed.

A trio of high-profile UW-Madison professors went public Wednesday with concerns about President Barack Obama's planned Thursday campaign rally, saying students who want to attend are unfairly being required to supply a phone number and email address to the campaign, even having to click "I'm In" to get a free ticket at the campaign's website. "If you want to go to this hugely important and interesting event you have to register with the campaign," said political science professor Donald Downs. "That raises questions." Downs was joined by law professor Ann Althouse and political science professor Ken Mayer

MADISON, Wisc. – It’s the kind of rally the Obama campaign wanted to show off to the world: a crowd of 30,000 students showing up for President Obama on a quadrangle on the leafy University of Wisconsin campus. But a day after Obama’s lackluster debate performance, the president’s bad fortune continued: Though the crowd and the president showed up, the national press corps did not. Because of a mix-up at the Denver airport, the press corps’ charter plane was delayed about half an hour en route to Madison, Wis., and failed to arrive on time.

As the U.S. presidential election approaches, President Barack Obama's "reset" with Russia has been dealt two painful blows, both of which are either directly or indirectly the fault of the Obama administration. After working in Russia since 1992, USAID was ordered to close the doors of its Moscow office by Monday. Meanwhile, U.S. government-funded Radio Liberty will also close down its radio broadcasting effective Nov. 10. Freedom and democracy in Russia has suffered two major setbacks, only worsening the situation with freedom of speech and human rights.

The Food and Drug Administration took a highly unusual step this week: It acknowledged that a widely used generic drug -- a copycat of the antidepressant Wellbutrin XL -- was not the equivalent of the original drug produced by GlaxoSmithKline since 2003. Like any entitled welfare addict, if you want to hear some squealing from Big Bird, all you have to do is hint that after decades of being on the government dole, maybe it's time to get off the taxpayer teat and take care of yourself. Heaven forbid. After all, it's hard out here for a puppet that takes in a cool $50 million a year off of merchandising alone. QUESTION: Why are taxpayers buried in $16 trillion in debt subsidizing a puppet richer than Mitt Romney? ANSWER: That's racist.

We all wondered which tack the Obama campaign would take after Wednesday night’s debacle. Now we know; they’re claiming that Mitt Romney is a liar. Top aide David Plouffe said that Team Obama was unprepared for the "remarkable" level of "dishonesty" displayed by Mitt Romney: We expected an aggressive Mitt Romney – that’s who he is. And in the primary, it was clear that the truth was really not his primary concern, but I still think it was remarkable to see him start the debate essentially... saying I don’t have a $5 trillion tax cut plan. Think about that.

LOS ANGELES- The price of gasoline equaled the all-time average high in California of $4.61 a gallon Saturday, fueled by a reduced supply and a volatile market. Prices throughout the state were expected to increase for several more days before leveling off, after a temporary reduction in supply triggered a price spike that saw fuming motorists paying $5 or more per gallon in some locations and station owners shutting down pumps in others. AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge report released Saturday said the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded across California rose 12 cents from its Friday mark

President Barack Obama’s campaign raised an eye-popping $181 million in September, belying months of claims that he is being out-raised by his challenger, Mitt Romney. “We … raised $181 million in September from 1.8 million Americans — more than 567,000 of whom gave for the first time,” said a 10.24 A.M. email from the campaign. The funds were raised by both Obama’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee. The news will be a morale-booster for Democratic partisans, who were shocked by Obama’s stunning defeat in the first presidential debate

Jobs numbers give Obama a boost

The monthly jobs report out Friday — unemployment down to 7.8 percent, the lowest of his presidency — was a shot of great news for President Barack Obama as Mitt Romney continues to slam him for the slow rate of economic recovery. Underscore this: There is a recovery. Job creation is one of the defining issues of the Obama-Romney contest, and the uptick — welcomed by the Obama team — hardly takes Obama’s record as a job creator off the Romney table. Both Romney and Obama stumped Friday in Virginia, a battleground state.

A month ago, Clint Eastwood’s Obama empty-chair shtick was universally agreed by liberals to have been a disaster for Romney. Now, it’s on the cover of The New Yorker. The artist, Barry Blitt, says it wasn’t the easiest of assignments: “This image seemed like a proper response to the first Presidential debate,” Blitt told the New Yorker’s Culture Desk. “But I’m not sure I realized how hard it is to caricature furniture.” That’s what hiring John Kerry as debate-coach gets you. When they put the Empty Chair on Mount Rushmore, I hope they append that quote underneath.

During his opening monologue tonight, Bill Maher admitted he was not happy with how President Obama did during his first big debate this week. He told his audience that Obama undeniably “sucked” during the debate, and surmised that the million dollars he gave to the campaign was probably spent on weed. Maher surmised that because Wednesday was Obama’s anniversary, “he apparently had the sex first and was completely spent” for the debate. He contrasted Romney looking “charged up” with Obama looking like Michael Jackson on diprivan. Maher admitted that Obama “sucked” during the debate, and made a joke
