Romney Wins Big

Halfway through, they should have stopped the fight. Gov. Mitt Romney eviscerated a staggering and bewildered President Barack Obama tonight in one of the most lopsided presidential debates in American history. Throughout the debate, which focused on domestic policy, Obama looked shaken, rarely looking at the camera, reciting old talking points and filibustering as Romney gave a master class at the University of Denver. (Snip) Obama could not have pleased anyone except those playing drinking games at home, with familiar references to corporate jets (drink!), job training programs (drink!), and tax cuts for shipping jobs overseas (drink!).

IRS: Obama tax hike threatens

Over and over again we hear Democrats claim that raising tax rates on the rich won’t dampen economic recovery. They also claim it would only affect a fraction of small business owners. In yesterday’s debate, the president asserted, as he has often, that 97 percent of businesses who pay individual rates would not see a tax increase. Well, judging from this new study by Internal Revenue, allowing Bush-era tax rates for high earners to expire, the centerpiece of President Obama’s tax plan and a big part of his campaign rhetoric, would mean that 1 million companies would be hit with

Gasoline station owners in the Los Angeles area including Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST) are beginning to shut pumps because of supply shortages that have driven wholesale fuel prices to record highs. Costco’s outlet in Simi Valley, 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles, ran out of regular gasoline yesterday and was selling premium fuel at the price of regular, Jeff Cole, Costco’s vice president of gasoline, said by telephone. The company hasn’t been able to find enough unbranded summer-grade gasoline to keep its stations supplied, he said.

Brace yourselves: Researchers at University of Huntsville in Alabama say they are using "Dilithium Crystals" in a new fusion impulse engine that could cut the travel time to Mars down to as little as six weeks, not the six months it takes now. Txchnologist, an online magazine sponsored by General Electric, talked to team member and aerospace engineering PH.D. candidate Ross Cortez, he said "The fusion fuel we're focusing on is deuterium [a stable isotope of hydrogen] and Li6 [a stable isotope of the metal lithium] in a crystal structure." Cairo - An Egyptian security official says authorities have ordered the release of two Coptic Christian boys taken into in juvenile detention for allegedly urinating on the Quran, but they will remain under investigation. Security chief Gen. Attiya Mazrou in Beni Suef province south of Cairo says the boys, ages 9 and 10, were taken Thursday to a police station to await their parents. A local radical cleric had publicized the alleged defiling. Rights groups say the incident showcases Islamist intimidation of Copts, estimated at 8 to 10 percent of the population.

WASHINGTON — The AFL-CIO says it has registered more than 450,000 new voters from union households in a bid to help President Barack Obama win reelection. The tally includes about 68,000 new voters in Ohio, one of the most contested battleground states this year. The labor federation registered thousands of other union-friendly voters in swing states like Colorado and Nevada. Voters from union homes have traditionally favored Democratic candidates. Exit polls show 59 percent of voters who lived in union households backed Obama in 2008, while 39 percent supported Republican John McCain.

The late Warren Zevon wrote the song “Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead” in 1991. After Wednesday’s presidential debate, it could be the new theme for the Obama campaign and even the liberals of MSNBC seemed to know it. Though some major media outlets attempted to limit the collateral damage. When the Rocky Mountain debate came to an end, a black cloud descended on the liberal off-shoot of NBC. (Snip) For MSNBCers, it was a sign of The End Times. Perennial Obama Fan Club President Chris Matthews lamented the whole ordeal, whining this “wasn’t an MSNBC debate, was

The morning after the first presidential debate, President Barack Obama was back on the campaign trail speaking at a rally in the frigid Colorado weather. He opened his speech by going after Republican opponent Mitt Romney, blasting the candidate for not being “the real Mitt Romney” by contradicting his own campaign beliefs while on stage last night. “It couldn’t have been Mitt Romney because the real Mitt Romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts in favor of the wealthy,” said the president. “The fellow on stage last night

New York - Monthly sales reports from major retailers are showing that Americans slowed down their spending in September as they took a pause after wrapping up their back-to-school buying. As retailers announced their monthly results Thursday, Limited Brands Inc. and Costco Corp. reported sales gains that beat analysts’ expectations. Target Corp. and Macy’s Inc. posted sales increases that were below what analysts had projected. Teen accessories retailer The Buckle reported a surprise sales decline.

BISBEE, Ariz. -- Border Patrol Agent Nicholas Ivie was the sort of man on whom a rancher could depend, said John Ladd, the fourth generation of his family on a 16,000-acre cattle ranch abutting the U.S.-Mexico border. A few weeks ago, Ivie punched his personal phone number into Ladd's cellphone for the rancher's keeping, he said. "That was his way of telling me ... you call me no matter what you need," Ladd said. "He was just a really good guy." Such are the stories trickling out from friends and family of Ivie,

Al-Qaeda has been blamed for a recent series of forest fires across Europe, as the head of Russia's Federal Security Service claimed they were set by arsonists as part of the group's low-cost attack strategy. "One should note that setting fires to forests in the countries of the European Union is a new tendency in al-Qaeda's strategy of a 'thousand cuts'," Alexander Bortnikov said, according to state news agency RIA Novosti, at a meeting of heads of security agencies. "This method allows (al-Qaeda) to inflict significant economic and moral damage without serious preliminary preparations, technical equipment or significant expenses."

In the wake of tomorrow's highly anticipated monthly jobs report and last night's catastrophic debate loss, more bad news arrived this morning for the Obama Administration. Filings for first-time jobless claims spiked to 367,000, an increase of 4,000 over last week. Like a dim-witted child, President Obama's given the benefit of every doubt by the corrupt media and is always graded on a curve. This means that, because new jobless claims aren't over 400,000, we're usually told something like this: Claims aren't making much progress on a week-to-week or even a month-to-month basis, but the numbers aren't rising either.

WASHINGTON - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose only slightly last week after a big drop the week before, a hopeful sign the job market is still on the mend. Other data on Thursday showed a sharp drop in new orders for U.S. factory goods, although orders outside the transportation sector rose for a second straight month, which should calm fears of a rapid loss of momentum in factory activity. "The economy is obviously feeling the strain from cooler global conditions and the policy uncertainty that continues

An important shift is developing in Saudi Arabian currency derivatives markets as Iran becomes engulfed in populist protests amid hyperinflationary pressures and armed conflict breaks out between Turkey and Syria, heightening concerns about tensions in the Middle East. The 12-month forward rate on the Saudi Arabian riyal – or the difference between how many riyals traders think a dollar will be able to buy a year from now and how many riyals a dollar can buy today – has been hovering just above zero for the past two weeks.

Denver - Mitt Romney prevailed over President Barack Obama in their first debate on Wednesday — with Obama not able to present a forceful defense of his tenure in office or why he deserved a second term. Romney put Obama off his game. Romney won — but did not turn the contest “upside down” as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie predicted last Sunday. He beat Obama by a few points, not a knockout. Capitol Hill lawmakers expressed frustration after their requests for more information on the Libya attack were rebuffed by the State Department, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urging lawmakers to wait for the conclusion of an internal review. That review, though, could take months. Sens. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., on Wednesday renewed their demand for documents after Clinton declined to hand over the cables they initially requested. The House Intelligence Committee has not received any documents from the department either, Fox News has learned. "We hope that in the next few days you

Demand for U.S. factory goods in August fell by the most since January 2009, but the second straight month of gains in orders outside transportation hinted at a less rapid loss of momentum in manufacturing activity. The Commerce Department said new orders for manufactured goods tumbled 5.2 percent - the biggest drop since the recession - dragged down by a slump in demand for transportation equipment that was telegraphed in last week's report on orders for long-lasting manufactured goods. Factory orders had risen 2.8 percent in July and economists had expected them to drop 5.8 percent in August.

To the surprise of pretty much no one in baseball, the Red Sox announced Thursday afternoon that embattled manager Bobby Valentine was fired after only one season at the helm. The Red Sox finished in last place in the American League East with a record of 69-93, 26 games behind the first-place Yankees, a bummer in the 100th anniversary season of Fenway Park. The team said a search for a new skipper would begin immediately. "This year's won-loss record reflects a season of agony," Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino said in a statement.
