Did Mitt Romney win the first presidential debate between him and Barack Obama? Did Sitting Bull win at Little Big Horn? You would have been surprised, if you had been the proverbial man (or woman) from Mars, to guess which candidate—the incumbent president of the United States or the former one-term governor of Massachusetts—had a better command of either the details of public policy. Obviously Mitt Romney did. And you would have gotten the sense that one of the two candidates had a sense of command and the other was hugely on the defensive.

The big question going into last night’s debate was what Mitt Romney had to do to change the course of the campaign. My answer was simple: Romney had to win the debate. He did. Clearly and resoundingly. Romney aced the biggest test he has faced so far and, as a result, the race likely will enter a new phase. The challenger is alive and well.

Conservative TV viewers know what to expect from today's programs. If a series brings up a political topic chances are it will be from a left of center perspective. Conservative positions are often considered wrong or offensive. If, heaven forbid, a show introduces a GOP politician into the plot things may just get nasty. So when "New Girl," Fox's sophomore sitcom, brought up the Romneys this week it's understandable why fans of the GOP presidential candidate might flinch. The folks at Morning Joe had a lot of positive things to say about Mitt Romney‘s debate performance, with host Mika Brzezinski wondering why it is that the GOP candidate hasn’t been able to translate that passion onto the campaign trail. Fellow host Willie Geist was pleased that the debate included two very smart candidates with two different visions for America, but felt that Obama simply wasn’t prepared for “this” Romney. “It was like he had a lot of coffee before the debate, and he just was going after the President,” Brzezinski said of Romney’s performance.

Breaking from two decades of tradition, this year’s election exit poll is set to include surveys of voters in 31 states, not all 50 as it has for the past five presidential elections, according to multiple people involved in the planning. Dan Merkle, director of elections for ABC News, and a member of the consortium that runs the exit poll, confirmed the shift Wednesday.
