Today's Front Pages: Headline
Writers Avoid Calling a Winner
Slate, by Josh Voorhees    Original Article

As we explained late last night pundits wasted little time scoring Wednesday's debate a clear cut win for Mitt Romney. But a quick scan of the morning's front pages shows that—fortunately for President Obama—the nation's headline writers and art team largely avoided specifics in the hours between when the debate ended and when Thursday's editions went to press. As you'll see there was the occasional talk of a "Romney doing well; Obama didn't err," but that type of punditry was largely relegated to subheads. A typical bold-faced headline, meanwhile, involved the two men "sparring," "clashing" or "debating."

Reeling from a debate performance where President Obama often seemed listless and subdued relative to his Republican opponent, the Obama campaign's top strategist said Thursday they would more aggressively challenge Mitt Romney on alleged inconsistencies in his policies. "You know, you can't tell the American people up is down and down is up and ignore your history and ignore your statements," Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said Thursday on MSNBC. "You can't square the circle, and Gov. Romney is going to be held accountable for that." Axelrod went on to accuse Romney of playing "a shell game"

Romney Wins Debate Praise

The immediate reaction to Wednesday night’s presidential debate was a torrent of criticism directed at President Obama, with Republicans, and as well as many Democrats, accusing Mr. Obama of delivering a flat, uninspired and defensive performance. Republicans seemed genuinely surprised that his opponent, Mitt Romney, was energetic, aggressive and presidential during his first-ever general election debate. “In a thoroughly dominating performance, Romney bested Barack Obama in both tone and substance,” Stephen F. Hayes of the conservative Weekly Standard magazine wrote after the debate. “Obama often found himself at the end of a verbal cul-de-sac

Doris Spates was a baby when her father died inexplicably in 1955. She has watched four siblings die of cancer, and she survived cervical cancer. After learning that the Army conducted secret chemical testing in her impoverished St. Louis neighborhood at the height of the Cold War, she wonders if her own government is to blame. In the mid-1950s, and again a decade later, the Army used motorized blowers atop a low-income housing high-rise, at schools and from the backs of station wagons to send a potentially dangerous compound into the already-hazy air in predominantly

The final case to stem from the corruption investigation into imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich comes to a close Thursday, when a multimillionaire who once wielded enormous political influence in the state is expected to face a judge for sentencing. William Cellini, 77, was convicted last year for his role in trying to get a $1.5 million campaign contribution for Blagojevich from the Oscar-winning producer of “Million Dollar Baby” in exchange for state business. The Springfield businessman was once known to political insiders as the King of Clout for his behind-the-scenes influence in state government.

Well, that didn't take long. About 12 hours after last night's debate wrapped up the RNC went live with an online video attacking what it's calling President Obama's debate "smirk." Here was the blast that went out to reporters (via the Washington Examiner): "Good morning, we're out with a new video 'Smirk' highlighting the president's debate performance where he was visibly uncomfortable as he struggled to give Americans answers on how he'll turn our country around with another four years. As Morning Joe said this morning—it appeared as if Obama thought debating was beneath him."

BENGHAZI, Libya — A team of US investigators visited Libya's second city Benghazi on Thursday to examine the site where Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in an attack last month. "An American investigative committee visited the site where the US ambassador was killed," a defense ministry official in Benghazi told AFP, confirming that the team included FBI agents. The dirt road which leads to the front gate of the US mission in Benghazi was sealed off in the morning by defence ministry vehicles mounted with weapons, an AFP correspondent reported.

A U.S. probe of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the American ambassador and three colleagues faces hurdles including a contaminated crime scene and incomplete intelligence on the assault. The investigation so far has provided U.S. officials with a better understanding of the incident, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday, vowing that the U.S. would find those responsible for the attack. “There are continuing questions about what exactly happened in Benghazi on that night three weeks ago,” Clinton said.

There should be little surprise at the results of 2012's first presidential debate. What the heck else was Obama going to do or say?! This is what happens when you have to run on your sorry record. This is what happens when there is no teleprompter. This is what happens when you don't have the mainstream media to run cover for you. Chris Matthews essentially said as much, when, in his post-debate tantrum he asked, "Tonight wasn't an MSNBC debate tonight, was it?"

KitchenAid is famous for its mixers, but the brand learned the hard way about the perils of mixing personal political views with official company messaging on social media. On Thursday morning, parent company Whirlpool was in damage-control mode after an offensive message was sent from the company’s official Twitter account during last night’s presidential debate. “Obamas gma even knew it was going 2 b bad! 'She died 3 days b4 he became president',” the Tweet read, a response to a reference President Barack Obama made about his grandmother’s passing.

In the six months leading up to the assault on the United States consulate in Benghazi, the State Department reduced the number of trained Americans guarding U.S. facilities in Libya, according to a leading House Republican investigating the Sept. 11 anniversary attacks. The reduction in U.S. security personnel increased America’s reliance on local Libyan guards for the protection of its diplomats. This is the latest charge from Rep. Jason Chaffetz, the Utah Republican leading a House investigation on the Benghazi attacks, regarding alleged security defects in Benghazi.

Election 2012: Indifference of the administration and the Defense Department will cause a record low military vote this year, particularly in swing states. Those who protect our right to vote deserve better. A new report by the Military Voter Protection Project found that absentee ballot requests by the military have dropped significantly since 2008 and are on track to make 2012 a record low for the military vote. As of Sept. 22, requests were down 46% in Florida, 70% in Virginia and 70% in Ohio. "These are (the) lowest numbers we've seen in the last

Over the past month I worried that Mitt Romney was another GOP loser of a presidential candidate in the line of Bob Dole and John McCain. Dole and McCain are great Americans who have made profound personal sacrifices for our freedom, but as presidential candidates they were palookas. I wondered whether Romney was this year’s Republican bum of the month served up to lose honorably to the Democrats’ heavyweight champion. The answer Romney provided last night in the debate with President Obama (transcript here) was something like the great negation of Nathaniel Hawthorne saluted by Herman Melville

BEIRUT — Turkey’s parliament voted Thursday to authorize military cross-border operations into Syria, a day after an apparently errant mortar strike from inside Syria killed five Turkish civilians. Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay told the Associated Press that the 320-129 vote “is not for war,” but is intended to deter Syria from further violence that could spill over the border. Even before the vote, Turkey launched artillery attacks against Syria Wednesday night

In a chat with Neil Cavuto of Fox Business Network, Sarah Palin issues a prediction right after last night’s debate. “Ninety percent of the liberal media — the lamestream media — they’re going to say, of course, that Barack Obama won the debate.” Though Palin is generally crafty enough to make highly squishy statements about stuff, this one is slightly fact-checkable. Running down just a few of the institutions commonly associated with media mainstreamness, we discover that perhaps Palin needs to recalibrate just a touch:

Well, that was odd. President Obama’s stylistic strategy during Wednesday night’s debate seemed to be to try to stay right above the rancor, to appear dignified, presidential. The problem with that approach is that the line between dignified and presidential and anodyne and weak is the width of a cat’s hair. Romney, on the other hand, went on the attack, interrupting and rambling on, which to some will read as confidence and command of the facts, even if many of his statements were riddled with the, um, nonfactual.

In the wake of his miserable debate performance last night, what does Obama do now? I mean, besides smoking a whole pack of cigarettes when he got back to his Denver hotel suite. One option would be to actually prepare for the next debate, instead of spending 3 days at a luxury resort and taking sightseeing trips to Hoover Dam. But does Obama know how to buckle down and really work? He already complained that debate prep was no fun, and that level of sacrifice of fun proved to be wholly inadequate.

As the election draws near, President Obama’s celebrity supporters are stepping up their political presence in pop culture – and in the process, exposing their bizarre, immature predilection for spewing obscenities. Foul-mouthed purported comedienne Sarah Silverman, for example, recently fired off a controversial, unsurprisingly unfunny question to Republican candidate Mitt Romney on Twitter, in which she asked him, (Snip) Hilarious. And such a useful contribution to the political discussion in the most critical election of our time, if not in all of American history.

Very early this morning, less than two hours after the first presidential debate of 2012, Barack Obama dispatched yet another email plea for at least $5 from supporters. He said, "I hope I made you proud out there." Oops! That must have been written before Republican Mitt Romney and Obama spent 90-minutes exchanging 17,000 words on their ideas, policies and differences for the future of this troubled and divided country.

DENVER — Mitt Romney emerged as the decisive winner of the first presidential debate with President Barack Obama on Wednesday night, a reality even the president’s surrogates were unable to spin. No defining moments emerged from the debate, which lasted 90 minutes. The zingers from both sides were underwhelming. During the evening, the two candidates mainly wonked out and discussed their differences on everything from Medicare to taxes to deficit reduction. But style, more than substance, led to Romney’s clear advantage. The former Massachusetts governor was aggressive, and he made his arguments without any sign of hesitation.

During last night's debate, Barack Obama, the greatest man to have ever walked the face of the earth, went down in flames. Mitt Romney destroyed him in the first debate. As a political junkie, I have seen my share of debates; my favorite was Reagan/Carter in 1980, which Reagan won handily. Yet, this was an even more impressive victory for Romney. He appeared to have everything over a petulant and unprepared opponent, who seemed to think -- as he does with all things, that his mere presence, the brilliance of his aura, would guarantee

ABC's George Stephanonopoulos carried a eight-out-of-nine record of declaring the Democratic presidential candidate the winner into Wednesday night's Obama-Romney presidential debate. Surprisingly, the Clinton administration veteran affirmed that Mitt Romney scored points on President Obama: "I think Governor Romney definitely more crisp in his presentation tonight....he was able to be aggressive without being offensive." Stephanopoulos later claimed that "Governor Romney will get the boost that challengers usually get coming out of these debates," while downplaying President Obama's own performance: "I didn't see any knockout punches....didn't see breakthrough moments or major mistakes by either candidate."
