Whatever Happened to Truth?

Did you know that one-third of children in Ohio are enrolled in Medicaid? Neither did I, until last week when I picked up a copy of the Bucyrus (Ohio) Telegraph-Forum and read down to the seventh paragraph of a story headlined, "Study says more children have health insurance." The positive spin in the headline was undercut by the statistical facts of the story: "The increase in children on insurance comes as median incomes across the state were relatively flat, and the percentage of families in poverty -- especially those with children -- rose slightly."

The Sierra Club is spending $625,000 to defeat a Republican lawmaker who has championed one of the environmental organization’s most cherished goals – draining the Hetch Hetchy reservoir in Yosemite National Park. Campaign finance reports show that in September, the Sierra Club Independent Action super political action committee made several expenditures targeting U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren of Gold River, who is locked in a tight race against Democrat Dr. Ami Bera, an Elk Grove physician. The club is paying for a hard-edged series of TV commercials and mailers in the Sacramento-area district.

An argument over the 2012 election led to a domestic battery charge for an elderly Hollywood man who struck his wife after yelling at her "about Obama and Romney," police said Wednesday. Peter Schwartz, 74, was arrested at his home in the 4000 block of Hillcrest Drive around 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Hollywood Police arrest report. Schwartz's wife told police the two had gotten into a verbal argument about "politics" and she ran away when he started yelling at her about "Obama and Romney," the report said.

An explosive 141-page investigative report was quietly released just after midnight by the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is an indictment of the practices and procedures of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. While this report provides details of the investigation of “fusion centers,” or intelligence centers across the country under the control of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, it provides critical insight into the workings of the DHS itself. The report, available here in PDF format, notes that a review by subcommittee investigators of 13 months

She's a former nun, an Army major, a lawyer, a college professor and a physician. Now Dr. Barbara Bellar wants to be a state senator from Illinois, and she has one question about ObamaCare. “What the blank could possibly go wrong?” Bellar asks, tongue in cheek, after delivering a one-sentence indictment of President Obama's health care law. He left the United States in 2006 and may now be living in Aleppo, Syria, with his wife, at least one daughter and other relatives. A new poll finds that Mitt Romney's secretly recorded comments about the "47 percent" of Americans who do not pay taxes did more to turn voters off than President Obama's "You didn't build that" remark at a campaign rally in Virginia. According to a survey released Tuesday night by NBC News and The Wall Street Journal, 45 percent of voters said Romney's comments at a private fundraiser gave them a negative impression of the candidate. Alternatively, 23 percent said the comment gave them a more positive review of the candidate.“There are 47 percent

Yesterday in Iran, there were major protests over the plummeting value of the rial. Tear gas was used to disperse the demonstrators, some of whom were setting fire to tires and rubbish bins. There were many arrests, reports say. Eyewitnesses told the BBC that scores of people gathered outside the central bank, calling for the governor to stand down, chanting anti-government slogans. The rial has plummeted to record lows against the US dollar in recent days. Money dealers were joined by traders from the nearby central bazaar, reports say.

The 1,000 or so marijuana plants — some as tall as Christmas trees — stretched across land the size of two football fields, but it took police in a helicopter to spot the massive grow operation on the far South Side. There were no reports of any arrests Wednesday. The marijuana was found on a stretch of land along the 10600 block of South Stony Island Avenue, not far from the Harborside International Golf Center, according to a police source.

Is America ready for a really stiff drink? Distillers are rolling out a growing number of whiskies, rums, gins—even cognacs—with higher-than-normal concentrations of alcohol. The offerings come by a variety of monikers, with some makers dubbing them "overproof"—a reference to the fact that they go beyond the standard proof of 80 (or 40% alcohol by volume). Others prefer "cask strength" or "barrel strength," which means a spirit hasn't been heavily diluted before bottling. Still others use the term "navy strength," the potency historically demanded by the British Royal Navy. (If gunpowder doused with a spirit ignited,

“If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period.” “The allegation … — that ATF ‘sanctioned’ or otherwise knowingly allowed the sale of assault weapons to a straw purchaser who then transported them into Mexico — is false.” The Benghazi terrorist attack, in which jihadists killed four Americans, was a spontaneous “response to a video that is offensive.” I could go on, but you get the point. This administration lies whenever lying is expedient in a scheme it is trying to accomplish or an accusation it is trying to dodge.

This week, sequestration made headlines again, as Lockheed Martin announced its intention to fall in line with the executive branch’s astonishing request that defense contractors wilfully violate the WARN Act. Per its declaration, the firm will defer sending layoff notices made necessary by the sequestration law; and in return they will receive immunity from the consequences, along with a promise that any fines will be picked up by Uncle Sam. This morning, I spoke to Senator Lindsay Graham about the development. Graham is deeply concerned about the move, and about the lack of attention it is receiving —

In an interview with "CBS This Morning" on Wednesday, Gibbs was asked about a video of then-Illinois Sen. Obama delivering a speech in 2007 in which he discussed the anger many African-Americans affected by the 2005 storm’s devastation felt at Washington’s mishandled relief efforts. “The president says the incompetence surrounding the federal government’s response to Katrina in 2005 was colorblind,” said Gibbs. “If the Republicans want to defend the Bush

Women who want to play intercollegiate ice hockey probably wouldn’t apply to Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass., because the small Catholic school doesn’t have an ice hockey team for women. But that’s about to change. Following a federal civil rights investigation, Merrimack has agreed to create three new female athletic teams, including a women's hockey team that eventually will play at the Division I level – just as the Merrimack men’s hockey team does. As a first step, the school said it needs to find out "if there is sufficient interest and ability”

Bowden had access to key players including C.I.A. deputy director Michael Morell and the president himself. According to Bowden in the story—in November’s Vanity Fair—in the unlikely event that bin Laden surrendered, Obama saw an opportunity to resurrect the idea of a criminal trial, which Attorney General Eric Holder had planned for

NBA star Antoine Walker blew through the $110million he earned in a successful basketball career so quickly that he was forced to file for bankruptcy just two years after he retired. Walker, who was forced to come out of retirement and play in the obscure development league, says bad real estate deals, gambling debts and 14 years of living the high life have left him all but broke today. It is a far cry from his glory days in the NBA, where he was named to the all-star team three times and won a championship in 2006.

Still, Rivera did not resign from the sheriff’s office, where she has worked for 15 years.

Imagine you hire a company to fix your roof. They proceed to do shoddy work, miss every promised deadline and go wildly over budget. Would you then hire them to add a new room to your house? No, of course not. But that is exactly what President Obama is asking the American people to do in his latest television ad. "If I could sit down with you in your living room or around the kitchen table," Obama says directly into the camera, "here's what I'd say." He then goes on to outline a new "economic patriotism,"
