New York - The number of eligible Latino voters has reached a historic high, with almost 24 million able to participate in November's presidential election, an increase of 4 million over the previous ballot in 2008. (Snip) But Pew's research also underscores the unfulfilled nature of Latino political power. In 2008, only half those entitled to vote actually cast their ballots – a participation rate well beneath that of African Americans (65%) and whites (66%). The turnout of Hispanics in November could be even lower, as Census Bureau data suggests that the number of Latinos who are registered to vote

Immigrant job-seekers have gained far more in President Barack Obama’s weak economy than have native-born Americans, according to government data. Since Obama’s inauguration, employers have fired and hired millions of workers during the bust and slow recovery. The net result is that they employed more than 1.7 million more immigrants — but only 418,000 more native-born Americans — in August 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ household survey. (Snip) The job data is collected in the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly survey of American households. The survey shows that immigrants won three out of every four jobs added

"It’s my contention right now that these white, liberal media outlets are racist based on the priorities of what they cover and what they don’t cover." So said conservative talk radio host Mark Levin in Monday's opening monologue about the media's refusal to cover Mexican homicides associated with the Obama administration's failed "Fast and Furious" program as well as countless black murders in Chicago (video follows courtesy our dear friends at The Right Scoop with transcript and commentary): (Snip) Dozens of people have been killed, the vast majority of whom are Mexicans, but including Americans. Lockheed Martin on Monday backed down from its summertime threat to issue layoff warnings to employees just before the November election, saying the Obama administration has given assurances that it won’t immediately kill any major defense contracts when automatic spending cuts go into effect in January. The announcement ends a months-long standoff with the administration that could have turned into a political headache, but the news drew criticism from Republicans who questioned whether the Pentagon and White House budget office even had the legal authorityknown as sequesters

The White House has held a series of secret meetings in recent months to examine the threat posed by al-Qaeda’s franchise in North Africa and consider for the first time whether to prepare for unilateral strikes, U.S. officials said. The deliberations reflect concern that al-Qaeda’s African affiliate has become more dangerous since gaining control of large pockets of territory in Mali and acquiring weapons from post-revolution Libya. The discussions predate the Sept. 11 attacks on U.S. compounds in Libya but gained urgency after the assaults there were linked to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM.

The Federal Reserve’s risky effort to reduce interest rates is hitting swing-voting retirees in the wallet — and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is blaming the financial crisis. “I know that people who rely on investments that pay a fixed interest rate … are receiving very low returns, [which is] a situation that has involved significant hardship for some,” he said in an Oct. 1 speech in Indianapolis. However, he added, “I would encourage you to remember that the current low levels of interest rates … are in a larger sense the result of the recent financial crisis — the worst

A recall of peanut butter and other nut products has some of the country's largest grocery stores pulling store-brand products off their shelves. New Mexico-based Sunland Inc. has expanded its recall of peanut butter and almond butter to include cashew butters, tahini and blanched and roasted peanut products. The company, which sells its nuts and nut butters to large groceries and other food distributors around the country, recalled products under multiple brand names last month after salmonella illnesses were linked to Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, one of the brands it manufactures. In addition to Trader Joe's,

A Chinese restaurant in Kentucky is closed for business after officials found road-kill in its kitchen. Health inspectors shuttered the Red Flower Chinese Restaurant in Williamsburg after customers saw two employees wheel in a dead deer stuffed in a trash can, WYMT-TV reported. "It was really disturbing. There was actually a blood trail that they were mopping up behind the garbage can," customer Katie Hopkins told the local television station. On November 7th, while cleaning crews are still tidying up from election night parties, America's political class will be hurling themselves into another essential battle over government spending, taxes and debt. On January 2nd, 2013, absent some kind of budget deal, America will fall off the "fiscal cliff" and face a massive tax increase and across the board cuts in government spending. Like most crisis these days, it's a creation of politicians. A new study from the Brookings Institution's Tax Policy Center finds that the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts at the end of the

A new anti-Mitt Romney ad from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees features Richard Hayes, the garbageman who deals with the Romneys’ trash at their oceanfront mansion in La Jolla, California. Dubbed by AFSCME as one of the “people who make America happen,” Hayes talks about his laborious job, and criticizes the GOP nominee for not caring about the government-dependent “47 percent” of voters who the candidate believes won’t vote for him anyway: “My name is Richard Hayes, and I pick up Mitt Romney’s trash. We’re kind of like the invisible people.

This weekend brought us another reminder of how low the New York Times’s standards are for authors who are willing to make liberal arguments while claiming conservative credentials. On Sunday, the newspaper ran an article on President Obama’s health care law that was about as vacuous as any you’ll read, but it had this going for it: the author, J.D. Kleinke, is a resident fellow at the right of center American Enterprise Institute and his piece is entitled “The Conservative Case for Obamacare.” The article doesn’t make any effort to engage actual conservative policy

The US State Department said Monday it would work with Congress to try to unblock some $450 million in economic aid for Egypt, after a lawmaker froze the funds. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland confirmed the US administration had asked Congress to free up the money in two tranches to support the government in Cairo. But she said there were "concerns" about the plan amid rocky ties between the United States and Egypt, under its new Islamist leader, President Mohamed Morsi. "We're obviously going to have to work with the Congress in the coming days and weeks to explain why

During the perfect storm of '08, Barack Obama enjoyed a 7% advantage over John McCain when it came to party turnout. In other words, Democrats enjoyed a D+7 turnout advantage over Republicans. This also means Democrats were more excited and enthused to vote in almost record numbers. According to a new CNN poll, Obama is going to beat that! According to CNN, Democrats are even MORE enthused and excited than they were in 2008! According to CNN, Republicans are just as demoralized and willing to stay home as they were in 2008!

Mitt Romney's garbage man is starring in a new attack ad that features him at work picking up trash outside the Republican nominee's $12 million California mansion. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) labor union features the garbage man in an ad that juxtaposes him talking about how tough his job it with Romney's notorious '47 per cent' comments in which he says that 'my job is not to worry about those people' who don't pay federal income tax. In the ad, the garbage man states: 'My name is Richard Hayes, and I pick up

In its latest effort to slap Mitt Romney's "47 percent" comment, the Obama campaign on Monday tapped a young woman with Down syndrome to pull at the heartstrings of undecided voters. Cambridge, Mass. — Celebrated historian Bertram Oxley has uncovered a memorandum from former Japanese Emperor Hirohito to Admiral Yamamoto dated December 6, 1941, showing that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was motivated by an offensive film made by Charlie Chaplin ridiculing Japanese cuisine. “Contrary to historical accounts over the last seventy years,” Professor Oxley said in an interview today with the BBC, “What appeared to be a meticulously planned surprise attack was actually a spontaneous demonstration by moderate sushi connoisseurs in the Imperial Navy in response to a hateful and offensive movie.
