Don’t let up on the fake Indian, Scott. Is she going to stop mentioning that you’re a Republican? Of course not. So why would you choose to unilaterally disarm? They want you to be “gentler”? Ask your friend John McCain how gentle worked out for him. Since she began checking the box, Granny Warren’s life is a testament to the truth of Sir Walter Scott’s immortal line: “Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.” She’s always backpedaling, covering up her tracks, trying to explain away some hole in last week’s explanation

Depending on the poll, a majority of Americans say they believe our country is heading in the wrong direction, doubt their children will have a better future, and believe American values are eroding. This summer, I set out in a minvan with my husband and two kids to check the nation's pulse, to meet with dozens of people who are on the front lines, dealing with community problems from hunger to homelessness, from unemployment to the lack of affordable health care. I expected to find people defeated from a long effort to deal with the most brutal recession in our lifetimes.

A new poll issued by the Arab American Institute (pdf here) yesterday and conducted by JZ Analytics reports that President Obama maintains a commanding lead over Governor Mitt Romney in the election but that Obama's edge has dropped by 15% since the 2008 election. Arab-Americans are defecting from both both the GOP and the Democratic Party and are increasingly identifying as Independents (24%), according to James Zogby. (Snip)It's interesting to consider whether Obama's powerful advantage with ethnic Americans has wilted 'enough' to give Romney an opportunity.

As a recovering pollster (I worked for Democratic pollster Peter Hart from 1974 to 1981), let me weigh in on the controversy over whether the polls are accurate. Many conservatives are claiming that multiple polls have overly Democratic samples, and some charge that media pollsters are trying to discourage Republican voters. First, some points about the limits of polls. Random-sample polling is an imprecise instrument. There's an error margin of 3 or 4 percent and polling theory tells us that one out of 20 polls is wrong, with results outside the margin of error. Sometimes it's easy to spot

In Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 3 a.m. television ad in the 2008 primary campaign, we heard the sound of a ringing phone and saw sleeping children. In ominous tones, a narrator warned that “something is happening in the world” and asked, “Who do you want answering the phone?” Well, it’s 2012, and — the phone is still ringing. Please, somebody answer the damn thing! The story of the terror attack in Benghazi is that neither Clinton nor the president who made her secretary of state responded to the real emergency when it came. The biggest foreign-policy crisis of the last four years

“The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam,” said President Obama, self-appointed Defender of the Faith, in his UN address last week. But, he added carefully, “those who condemn that slander [of Islam] must also condemn the hate we see when the image of Jesus Christ is desecrated, churches are destroyed or the Holocaust is denied.” Obama was pushing a point about the reactions to a video mocking Islam, but his speech may well have revealed his thinking about Judaism and Israel. His carefully crafted words suggest that each religion has its major figure —

Was climate change responsible for the Mongol hordes? First scientists told us that a “distinct drying” during the third century might have encouraged the fall of the Roman Empire, prompting critics to decry the idea as the “latest global warming scare tactic.” Now the journal Science is highlighting similar speculations that wet and warm conditions in the central Asian steppe in the 13th century help explain the exceptionally rapid expansion of the imfamously cruel Mongols under Genghis Khan. Mongol horsemen relied on domesticated animals; Amy Hessl, one of the scientists involved in the research, explained to LiveScience in July

Tiger Woods was benched for the first time in his career at the Ryder Cup on Saturday - but Team USA thrived even without its biggest superstar. America's golfers pulled ahead of their European counterparts on the competition's second day, taking a 10-6 lead which leaves them in touching distance of the cup. The day's sport at Medinah Country Club in the suburbs of Chicago was watched by not one but two ex-Presidents - both George H.W. Bush and his son George W. attended the festivities.

The Obama administration issued new guidance intended for defense contractors Friday afternoon, reiterating the administration’s position that the companies should not be issuing layoff notices over sequestration. The Labor Department issued guidance in July saying it would be “inappropriate” for contractors to issue notices of potential layoffs tied to sequestration cuts. But a few contractors, most notably Lockheed Martin, said they still were considering whether to issue the notices — which would be sent out just days before the November election. But the Friday guidance from the Office of Management and Budget raised the stakes in the dispute,

CALL it the "no representation without taxation" shtick. Lexington has been in Pennsylvania this week (and Texas too, but that is for another day), looking at the science/art of get-out-the-vote efforts, and their dark cousin, namely efforts to suppress the votes of the other side. Democrats are pretty convinced that voter suppression is precisely what their Republican foes are up to, via a new law (currently facing legal challenges before the courts) that requires voters to show an up-to-date identity card with a photograph and expiry date, issued by one of a list of official authorities. Because the Obama Department of Energy’s loan-guarantee program for renewable energy startups and technologies has been such an unmitigated and resounding success, most particularly their well-trumpeted “investments” in solar-panel manufacturers, the federal government’s good common sense and dispassionate judgment have proved it to be a leading force in encouraging the research and development that has made these environmentalist-preferred technologies such viable and competitive substitutes for traditional energies. What’s more, these promising new industries have created untold productive, private-sector jobs, and the taxpayer has seen a healthy and enriching return on their initial “investments.” …Just kidding — that didn’t happen.

In July and August I worked on a post for Big Government about the human aspect of Operation Fast & Furious, the government gun walking operation that put guns into the hands of already dangerous Mexican drug cartels. The Old Media largely ignores Fast & Furious, but when they do pay attention, they scarcely mention the victims. Not until I put an enormous amount of pressure on The New York Times did they start saying "Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry" instead of just "a border patrol agent." Tomorrow, September 30, Univision will be airing “Aqui y Ahora” (Here and Now) about

Due to high taxes, burdensome regulations, lack of public sector reforms, and a lackluster job climate, more people have left California than come to the state since 2005, according to a comprehensive study by the Manhattan Institute released on Tuesday, suggesting California is no longer “perceived by most Americans as the land where dreams come true.” In the report, titled “The Great California Exodus: A Closer Look," Tom Gray and Robert Scardamalia found Californians have fled to states like Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, South Carolina, and Georgia because those

DES MOINES, Iowa- The election is all about an economy that Iowa voters think President Obama has done too little to fix. A Des Moines Register Iowa Poll shows Obama is ahead in Iowa 49% to 45%. But if Mitt Romney can convince voters that he truly knows how to doctor the nation's ailing economy, the GOP presidential candidate can still put Iowa in his pocket, political analysts say. Half of Iowa adults disapprove of the job the Democratic president is doing on the economy, an issue that 59% of likely voters here rank as one of the most important,

WASHINGTON- When last we saw the chief justice of the United States on the bench, John Roberts was joining with the Supreme Court's liberals in an unlikely lineup that upheld President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. Progressives applauded Roberts' statesmanship. Conservatives uttered cries of betrayal. Now, the Supreme Court is embarking on a new term beginning Monday that could be as consequential as the last one, with the prospect for major rulings about affirmative action, gay marriage and voting rights. Many people on both the left and right expect Roberts to return to

KABUL, Afghanistan- U.S. military deaths in the Afghan war have reached 2,000, a cold reminder of the human cost of an 11-year-old conflict that garners little public interest at home as the United States prepares to withdraw most of its combat forces by the end of 2014. The toll has climbed steadily in recent months with a spate of attacks by Afghan army and police against American and NATO troops, and questions about whether allied countries will achieve their aim of helping the Afghan government and its forces stand on their own after most foreign troops depart

Venezuela’s cancer-stricken leader, Hugo Chávez, appears to be losing ground to opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski, and the ruling party is taking dramatic steps to bully the opposition and to whitewash the results of the Oct. 7 balloting. Only in Venezuela could violent street gangs and a former U.S. president be on the same team. According to sources in Miraflores palace, about two months ago, Chávez began refusing cancer treatment and check-ups, insisting that returning to the campaign trail would invigorate him. In recent weeks, as doctors warned, this dangerous decision has taken a terrible toll.

MONTEVIDEO – The Uruguayan government announced Saturday the deactivation of an explosive device planted in its embassy building in Venezuela, and said that the case, which came eight days before the Venezuelan elections, is under investigation by the authorities. The bomb was discovered Friday morning in the garden of the building housing the Uruguayan Embassy, the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry said in a communique. The device, “which did not explode, was removed by Venezuelan police,” who proceeded to disarm it and who are currently “investigating the case,” he said. “There was no personal or material damage” at the Uruguayan diplomatic mission, he said.

Democratic judges who surprised Harris County in a 2008 rout because of strong turnout for Barack Obama are bracing for a tough fight in November after seeing the GOP, which had a clean sweep in 2010, continue to bolster its position statewide. In the county's 23 contested state district court races, 18 Democrats will have to overcome strong Republican momentum to keep their benches. "It doesn't look great," said Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston. "The state is trending conservative, so it will be difficult for Democrats to retain a lot of those seats."

On the eve of his death, U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens was ebullient as he returned for the first time in his new role to Benghazi, the eastern Libyan city that embraced him as a savior during last year’s civil war. He moved around the coastal town in an armored vehicle and held a marathon of meetings, his handful of bodyguards trailing discreetly behind. But as Stevens met with Benghazi civic leaders, U.S. officials appear to have underestimated the threat facing both the ambassador and other Americans. They had not reinforced the U.S. diplomatic outpost there to meet strict safety

Lee Boyd Malvo said he remembers each of the sniper shootings in detail. But one moment — one image — stands out among the carnage of that terrifying time 10 years ago: “Mr. Franklin’s eyes.” Malvo remembers being in the blue Chevrolet Caprice, in which police found binoculars and walkie-talkies. He scanned the area to make sure John Allen Muhammad had a clean shot. He gave the “go” order and looked across Route 50 in Seven Corners at the target. Muhammad, hidden on a hill above, pulled the trigger. A bullet screamed across the highway, instantly killing Linda Franklin

A tipping point in the ongoing efforts by the Obama administration to downplay the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya may have been reached this weekend. After weeks of placidly regurgitating the White House spin on the Libya attack, the headlines on the front page of the New York Times showed that even the leading liberal cheerleader for the president understood the game was over: “Shifting Reports on Libya Killings May Cost Obama; An Opening for Romney; Intelligence Aides Say Attack on Compound Was ‘Organized.’” That sums the situation up nicely but the Times has it slightly

Much has been said about an alleged "hidden neo-liberal package" fabricated by opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski to be implemented in the event of taking office. Both the challenger and members of his campaign team have stubbornly rebutted it. Nevertheless the matter was good for spokespersons of the Unified Democratic Panel (MUD) to refer to the Socialist Plan 2013-2013, labeled by them as communist. "There is consistency of what used to be called the communist world with what is purported here in Venezuela," commented in a recent press conference, José Guerra, former chief research officer at the
