Several Christian families have fled their homes in Egypt's Sinai peninsula after receiving death threats from suspected Islamist militants, officials and residents told AFP on Friday. Last week, flyers began circulating in the town of Rafah on the Gaza Strip border demanding that its tiny Coptic population move out, residents said. Officials at the local church informed the authorities of the threats, but no action was taken, they added. Days later, a shop belonging to one of the families was fired on with automatic rifles, witnesses said.

As many as 1,000 students at a New Jersey high school are expected to boycott their cafeteria today to protest the Obama administration’s new lunch guidelines that many teenagers say are leaving them hungry. Instead of purchasing their lunch in the cafeteria, many students at Parsippany Hills High School are brown-bagging it – upset over smaller portions and higher prices. “We’re asking everybody not to buy lunch or anything from the cafeteria,” student Brandon Faris told the Parsippany Patch. Faris, a 17-year-old senior and junior Nicholas Caccavale, organized the strike and more than 1,000 of their classmates have joined a

Business activity in the U.S. unexpectedly contracted in September for the first time in three years, adding to signs manufacturing will contribute less to the economic recovery. The Institute for Supply Management-Chicago Inc. said today its business barometer fell 49.7 this month from 53 in August. A reading of 50 is the dividing line between expansion and contraction. Uncertainties surrounding domestic fiscal policy and weakening economies in Europe and China may prevent companies from adding to headcount and ramping up production. Slow growth prospects prompted the Federal Reserve to announce more

Stocks fell on Friday after news that U.S. consumers spent more last month only because higher gas prices forced them to. Even with the declines on the last trading day of the quarter, stocks were set to post small gains for the three-month period. (Snip) Americans spent more in August even though their income barely grew, the Commerce Department said. But the spending increase was driven by higher gasoline prices.Investors were also worried about Spain’s economy. France has unveiled its budget for 2013, avoiding big austerity spending cuts in favour of higher taxes on the wealthy and big businesses. French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault confirmed that there is to be a new 75% tax rate for people earning more than 1m euros (£800,000; $1.3m) a year. But he insisted that nine out of 10 citizens will not see their income taxes rise in the new budget. The government plans to raise 20bn euros in extra revenue. That compares to 10bn euros in spending cuts.

Denver — The suspect in Colorado's deadly movie theater attack was barred from university property for threatening a professor, prosecutors said in court documents released Friday, raising more questions about why campus police didn't report his actions to other authorities. The revelation conflicts with the university's statements that James Holmes was denied access to non-public parts of the campus because he had withdrawn from school. The name of the person Holmes allegedly threatened has been blacked out. In court testimony Aug. 30, University of Colorado psychiatrist Lynne Fenton, also a professor at the school, said she contacted campus police after meeting Headline split by staff.

Tallahassee, Fla. - The Republican Party of Florida is filing an election fraud complaint against a vendor suspected of submitting questionable voter registration forms. The move comes as counties across Florida are turning over to prosecutors registration forms the vendor collected for the state party. Election officials in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties on Thursday handed over more than 100 suspect forms to local prosecutors. They did so days after officials in Palm Beach County also alerted prosecutors.

Canned tuna made news last week as the star in a scandalous debate: A coalition of consumer groups is reportedly urging schools to take tuna off the lunch menu. The reason? A recently published study that reported higher amounts of mercury than expected, as well as large variances in the levels of mercury, based on tests of several different brands and types of canned tuna. The problem with these headlines is that they aren't exactly true. The report, titled Tuna Surprise: Mercury in School Lunches, doesn't actually call for tuna to be banished from the lunch menu.

On Thursday, Mother Jones reported that billionaire financier George Soros was "panicked" that Mitt Romney would win the election--and then scrubbed the story without explanation. Twice this week, progressive media outlets have embarrassed themselves by jumping on stories that looked like promising anti-Republican material only to discover hours later they'd been fooled. In one case, the mistake was a piece of satire, the other a joke mistaken for a serious comment. Tuesday morning Politico's Roger Simon posted an article which was clearly not meant to be taken seriously. The thrust of the piece was that Paul Ryan had become unhinged and was "marching around his campaign bus, saying things like, 'If Stench calls, take a message' and 'Tell Stench I’m having finger sandwiches with Peggy

AUSTRALIA will push harder for a tough new international gun control regime if it wins a seat at the UN Security Council, in a move to crack down on civil unrest, gang violence and criminal activity. Foreign Minister Bob Carr told The Weekend Australian that under a draft treaty being pushed by Australia, all states would be held responsible for what happened to their weapons after they left their shores. The Arms Trade Treaty failed to win the necessary backing last month amid opposition from the US and Russia.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Thursday that she has ordered written guidance be issued that same-sex couples' relationships be considered "family relationships." The move is the most tangible proof yet that the Department is taking action urging field offices not to pursue deportation cases against a foreign same-sex partner of an American citizen who would be able to obtain a green card if in an opposite-sex relationship. The news came in a letter from Napolitano to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday, where she stated that "the phrase 'family relationships' includes long-term, same-sex partners"

On one side of the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Thursday morning, doctors treated patients for swollen feet, breathing problems and high blood pressure. On the other side, county health workers began enrolling them in a free coverage program in preparation for the federal healthcare overhaul. Many of the 4,800 people seeking care at the annual massive free clinic this weekend will become eligible for health insurance in 2014 when the national law takes effect. Organizers said raising awareness about the healthcare changes is crucial. "It's as important as the care being delivered this year,"

At the Media Research Center's 25th Anniversary Gala in Washington, D.C., on Thursday night, former CBS News anchor Katie Couric was voted "The Worst Reporter in the History of Man." Couric barely edged out fellow former CBS News anchor Dan Rather. A crowd of more than 1,000 people attending the gala chose Couric for the honor. The other nominees were Rather, Bryant Gumbel and Brian Williams. The crowd made its choice known through a voice vote--which required a second-round run-off between Couric and Rather. Couric won the distinction as part of the MRC's at annual "Dishonors Awards."

SACRAMENTO — Support for Gov. Jerry Brown's plan for billions of dollars in tax hikes on the November ballot is slipping amid public anxiety about how politicians spend money, but voters still favor the proposal, according to a new USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll. The findings suggest that voters are leery of sending more cash to Sacramento in the wake of a financial scandal at the parks department, spiraling costs for a multibillion-dollar high-speed rail project to connect Northern and Southern California and ill-timed legislative pay raises. Brown's measure would

On MSNBC's "The Ed Show" tonight, DNC chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) severely downplayed any expectations one might have of President Obama at his first debate with Mitt Romney. Wasserman Schultz called Romney an "experienced and skilled debater," that he has done severe debate prep and that the incumbent has lost to his challenger in the first debate in previous election cycles. "Let's not discount the fact that Mitt Romney is an experienced and skilled debater," Wasserman Schultz said to Ed while discussing the upcoming debate next week.

Massive quantities of algae are now blooming in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, where the federal government has just spent $34 million in stimulus money to make the pool "sustainable" and "improve the quality and appearance of the water." "Action is needed at this time to address substantial repairs and structural deficiencies at the Reflecting Pool," said an environmental assessment published by the Department of Interior in 2009. "Engineering analysis has shown that differential soil settlement has compromised its structural system," said the assessment. "The stress on the foundation, joints, and coping has caused pervasive

Iran's semi-official FARS news agency has been fooled by an Onion story that found rural white voters prefer Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to President Obama. The agency on Friday republished, without attribution, a bogus Gallup poll from the satirical U.S. newspaper showing Obama badly trailing Ahmadinejad among rural white voters. According to the story, “77 percent of rural Caucasian voters ... would much rather go to a baseball game or have a drink with Ahmadinejad than spend time with Obama.” The story says rural whites prefer the Iranian leader because he “takes national defense seriously,”

A week after NATO announced it was halting joint operations between Western and Afghan forces, the Pentagon said on Thursday the U.S. would resume small-unit patrols, The Wall Street Journal reports. The initial ban came after a sharp increase in insider attacks, where Afghan security forces turn their weapons on NATO troops tasked with training them. More than 50 NATO troops have been killed from such attacks this year. The risk became exponentially higher in the wake of Muslim protests stemming from an anti-Islamic film produced in the U.S. Patrols were reinstated after
