Erin Moran was just 14 when she signed on to play Joanie Cunningham, the feisty little sister of Richie Cunningham in the hit Seventies show Happy Days. But while child actor Ron Howard, who played Richie, has since gone on to become an A-list Hollywood producer and director, his on-screen 'sister' has fallen on much harder times. Moran, 51, was photographed looking worse for wear outside a Holiday Inn in Corydon, Indiana, after reportedly being kicked out of the trailer she shared with her husband Steve Fleischmann. RadarOnline.com is reporting that Erin was kicked out of the trailer

(Montevideo) Uruguay’s Lower House of parliament was discussing on Tuesday night the legalization of abortion for which the ruling coalition was counting on having the sufficient votes. If finally approved Uruguay would join Cuba, which has made abortions accessible to all women during the first trimester of pregnancy Once passed by the Lower House the measure returns to the Senate for approval of changes, and President Jose Mujica has said he will sign it to become law.

Alicia Rodriguez so dislikes President Hugo Chavez, and blames him for making her native Venezuela unsafe, that the 80-year-old retiree is flying 1,300 miles from her adopted home in Miami to cast a vote against him. She’s not the only one. In what’s shaping up to be Chavez’s toughest election battle yet, Venezuelans who’ve fled to Florida since he took power in 1999 are mobilizing on the Internet to oust him from office. At least two groups have pledged to transport thousands of voters by chartered planes and buses to a polling center run by Venezuela’s consulate in New Orleans

For all of the wishful thinking in the mainstream press about President Obama’s positioning 40 days before this election, Obama’s approval rating looks remarkably similar to what it was on this date in 2010 — shortly before his party lost a historic 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats. On September 27, 2010 — exactly two years ago — Rasmussen Reports showed Obama’s net approval rating among likely voters to be minus-3 percentage points (with 48 percent approving and 51 percent disapproving).

Nothing clears the mind quite like a bacon crisis. Only 48 hours ago, America was kvetching and wailing about the wicked injustice of millionaire NFL football players being poorly officiated in a meaningless game by a band of substitute referees. Now we have a new shiny object to distract us: A report this week by something called the National Pork Association in Great Britain says a bacon shortage in 2013 is "now unavoidable." The report said droughts in the United States and Russia have killed the corn crop, which means there will be less food to feed piggies.

The discussion of the party identification composition of poll samples comes up in every presidential election with which I've been involved. Interested observers often opine that when a given poll shows that Candidate X is ahead, it cannot be correct because there is a higher percentage of voters who identify with Candidate X’s party in the sample than there should be, based on comparison to some previous standard.

Paraguayan president Federico Franco accused the Venezuelan regime of Hugo Chavez of ‘direct and malicious’ involvement in his country’s affairs in support of a ‘terrorist and criminal’ gang, the Popular Army of Paraguay, EPP, which has committed kidnappings, assaults and killings. Franco made the statements during an interview with journalist Patricia Janiot from CNN in Spanish. He added that he has documents and other evidence to support his accusation of Venezuela interference in support of EPP. According to the Paraguayan president the Chavez regime organized and developed training programs for members of EPP that have been involved in kidnapping

How about an impromptu Power Line Video Contest for the election home stretch? No cash prizes this time—just some good conversation here on the site. I’m inspired by our faithful reader and frequent commenter Steve Litvintchouk, who reminded us about the famous collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 1940. Legend has it that one of the engineers who helped design the bridge offered the explanation, “Musta put the decimal point in the wrong place.” Anyway, watching the video of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge disaster once again inspired the question:

British people have long bemoaned the gradual encroachment of Americanisms into everyday speech, via Hollywood films and sitcoms. Now, "Britishisms" are crossing the pond the other way, thanks to the growing online popularity of British media such as Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and The Daily Mail. (Snip) The Britishism invasion also includes "cheeky," "twee," "chat-up," "sell-by date" and "the long game," as well as "do the washing up," "keen on," "bit" (as in "the best bit"), "to book" (e.g. a flight), "called X" (instead of "named X") and "to move house."

If a new academic study is to be believed, Republican women politicians look more feminine than their Democratic counterparts. The study, by two UCLA researchers, found that female politicians with what are described as stereotypically feminine features tended to be Republicans, and the reverse was also true for Democratic women. GOP women rated, on average, twice as stereotypically feminine as Democrats. In fact, the authors said the correlation was so strong that undergraduates were regularly able to guess someone's party affiliation just by the way she looked.

Yosemite Nation Park — California public health officials have tested 100 workers at Yosemite National Park to determine whether they were exposed to the deadly mouse-borne hantavirus. Nine people who spent time at the park this year have been infected with the rare virus, the majority after staying at the “Signature” cabins in Curry Village. Three of them died. KTVU-TV Oakland said 100 park workers submitted to voluntary testing on Wednesday and they have been ordered not to discuss the testing. It was not known when the tests will be completed or if they would be made public.

Today, it was reported that in 2001 Elizabeth Warren represented a Massachusetts client in a Massachusetts Federal Courtroom in a case that involved Massachusetts law without a license to practice law in Massachusetts. The case was heard before the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston, and was titled Cadle Company v. Schlichtmann. Blogger Mark Thompson at the League of Ordinary Gentlemen, who had been Ms. Warren's most ardent defender until this new revelation, has changed his mind about Professor William Jacobson's argument that Ms. Warren has engaged in the unlicensed practice of

The White House today rejected criticism of the Obama administration’s response and changing rhetoric regarding the deadly Sept. 11 assault on the U.S. consulate in Libya as “unfortunate” attempts to politicize the attack. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the president is “absolutely focused on finding out exactly what happened.” GOP nominee Mitt Romney has noted the administration’s rhetorical evolution – from saying the attack was a spontaneous act to now admitting that it was an act of terrorism – and accused the president of not wanting to “level with the American people” or come “clean” with what really

U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is under attack for serving corporate clients and doing so without a Massachusetts law license. The problem isn't going away for Warren, the Harvard law professor who's engaged in a bitter campaign against Republican incumbent and heartthrob Scott Brown. On Wednesday, conservative blog Red Mass Group posted official correspondence from Warren listing her "primary practice location" as Cambridge, Mass. This representation could conflict with her campaign's assertion she "never represented that she was licensed to practice in Massachusetts."

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said Thursday that he's willing to subpoena documents from the Health and Human Services Department (HHS), alleging a conspiracy to hide the impact of President Obama's healthcare law. Issa, as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is investigating an $8 billion demonstration project in which Medicare pays bonuses to certain private Medicare Advantage plans based on quality. The congressman has suggested that HHS is using the bonus payments to mask the healthcare law's cuts to Medicare Advantage plans ahead of the election.

Most voters still don't think the economy will get better no matter which candidate wins the White House and which party wins control of Congress in November. But they’re now a little more confident in economic gains if Mitt Romney and the Republicans come out ahead. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only 34% of Likely U.S. Voters think the economy is likely to get better if President Obama is reelected and Democrats regain full control of Congress, marking little change from early July when the two sides ran nearly even. By comparison, 43% now believe the

R.A. Dickey rearranged his schedule so he could try for his 20th win at Citi Field, where he hoped to share the experience with fans. The knuckleballer did not disappoint. Before a crowd of 31,506 on Thursday, Dickey tied a career high with 13 strikeouts to beat the Pirates, 6-5. He became the first Mets 20-game winner since Frank Viola in 1990. It did not come easy. Upon leaving the game with two outs in the eighth, Dickey raised his cap to the crowd, which spent the afternoon hanging on every pitch. The crowd booed in the ninth when with one out, reliever Jon Rauch allowed a two-run homer

Not long ago, Independents were the go-to demographic for determining who would win elections. How the Independents swung, so too would the election. In 2008, Barack Obama carried Independents in Ohio by 8 points and in Florida by 7 points. (Snip) In both Ohio and Florida, Barack Obama’s “clear leads” all come from heavy over-sampling of Democrats, not from winning the crucial Indie vote. In fact, most of the polls that show Obama with big leads also show Romney handily winning Independent voters. Yet, somehow, Obama manages to increase his performance from 2008 despite Independents now opposing him. Let's take

Springfield, Va. - Mitt Romney seized upon a report revising economic growth in the second quarter downward as his latest piece of evidence in his ongoing effort to cast President Barack Obama's policies as ineffective at boosting the economy. “We have to have a strong economy. Right now, Russia’s economy is growing at about 4 percent per year. That’s their GDP growth. Ours was just revised last quarter down to 1.3 percent per year -- about a quarter or a fifth the rate of Russia’s," Romney said. A “tenderizing” steak process could be to blame after four people contracted E. coli earlier this month after eating steak from a north east Edmonton Costco store, says the province’s health super-board. Top health officials say they’re unsure if the bacteria was already on the fresh steaks when they were shipped from XL Foods Processing Plant, or if a meat tenderizing machine employed in all Costco locations is to blame. (Snip) Costco was cleaning the machine daily, he said, but health officials have ordered managers at Costco stores throughout the province to stop this particular tenderizing process, added Predy.

Super-sized sodas may not be welcome in New York City, but if Mayor Michael Bloomberg has his way, America's biggest city may someday have the world's biggest Ferris wheel -- a 625-foot-tall behemoth capable of carrying 1,440 people per ride. Bloomberg announced plans for the giant ride, envisioned for the borough of Staten Island, on Thursday, further cementing his reputation as a mayor for whom size does matter. Earlier this month, he ushered through the nation's first law cracking down on sales of giant sugary sodas. Beginning in March, restaurants, delis and food concession stands won't be able

Sheriff Joe Arpaio has plenty of reasons to be worried -- and 8 million reasons not to be. Arpaio's re-election campaign issued a news release Wednesday saying the campaign has raised more than $8 million, adding, "over $1 million in the last three months alone." Arpaio has two opponents in the November election. His fifth term in office, during which Arpaio turned 80, has been his most controversial. And with Arpaio, that's saying something. He's taken justifiable heat for being the anti-immigration enforcer for now-disbarred former County Attorney Andrew Thomas, a man with whom Arpaio Link repaired by staff.

While discussing her new book Mugged: Racial Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama, Coulter got into a heated tiff with all of the co-hosts (except conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck), with Whoopi Goldberg taking the most offense, demanding that the conservative columnist explain how much she actually knows “about being black.” As Coulter began to describe her thesis that “race-mongering has been very bad for America” and white “liberals use it to promote causes that have nothing to do with blacks and, in fact,

Canada? Really? Yes, the country with residents who supposedly leave their doors unlocked, the country with a murder rate a third of that of the U.S., the country with no Pam Gellar, no Tea Party, and no 2nd Amendment, is the what the Iranian government would consider "dangerous" for its citizens. Diplomats from Canada—officially the "world's most recommended country to visit"—recently walked out of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's speech at the U.N. General Assembly. On top of that, they also kicked Iranian diplomats out of the country and closed up Iran's Embassy.
