U.S. chief executives' view of the economy deteriorated sharply in the third quarter and is now as bleak as it was in the immediate aftermath of the last recession, with more planning to cut jobs over the next six months, according to a survey released by the Business Roundtable on Wednesday. The group's CEO Economic Outlook Index tumbled to 66 in the third quarter from 89.1 in the second, in the sharpest drop recorded in the survey's decade-long history. Confidence fell to its lowest point since the third quarter of 2009, when the U.S. had just emerged

Madeleine Albright is a woman of many talents. She is apparently also a woman of many hidden talents. Albright recently revealed one of them at the Kennedy Center during the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Drums Competition and Gala Concert. Albright, a long time jazz supporter, picked up the sticks and gave a surprise performance on the drums during the event on Saturday. According to the Washington Post, Albright played "quite creditably."

While Christian churches are being destroyed on a near daily basis in Muslim countries throughout the world, the Obama administration is investing millions of dollars to rebuild overseas Islamic mosques and minarets. According to the State Department, the mosque restoration program, first reported on back in 2010, is a “cultural preservation” project designed to “fight Islamic extremism by building relationships with Islamic leaders.” To that end, the State Department, through the US Agency for International Development, is spending millions to preserve mosques and minarets in 27 different Islamic countries.

The family of Omar Abdel Rahman, the Jama’a al-Islamiya leader serving a life sentence in the United States, plans to stage protests outside the Court Complex in New Cairo on Tuesday to coincide with the court hearing of the foreign funding case. The family said it intends to relay a message to the American administration and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that US democracy is a farce and the US judiciary is unjust, according to Abdel Rahman’s son, Abdallah. “When President Mohamed Morsy said in his famous speech in Tahrir Square that Abdel Rahman’s case is his top priority

Once upon a time in America, if a group of citizen volunteers set out to help election officials detect problems with the voter rolls, they would have been praised. If a group of citizen volunteers had detected scores of dead people on the voter rolls they would have received broad accolades from all corners of America. Once upon a time in America, we esteemed law abiding citizens who helped law enforcement detect law breakers – especially when it comes to the sanctity of elections. But this isn’t the America we used to know.

ELMHURST, Ill. — Remember "Obamamania?" In 2008, college campuses were filled with campaign posters and political rallies — and frenzy. This year, it's hard to find a college student truly excited about the presidential race. Take Abraham Mulberry, a freshman at Elmhurst College in suburban Chicago. Mulberry says politics again has become "that thing you don't want to bring up." Mulberry is trying to start a club for young Democrats at his school. Last election, the Elmhurst campus had an active Students for Obama chapter that organized well before the election.

Delegates at the United Nations General Assembly applauded the speech given by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Wednesday. The U.S. delegation announced Wednesday morning it would not attend the speech. In a statement to CNN, the delegation said, “Over the past couple of days, we’ve seen Mr. Ahmadinejad once again use his trip to the U.N. not to address the legitimate aspirations of the Iranian people but to instead spout paranoid theories and repulsive slurs against Israel.”

Now that Todd Akin is officially on the ballot as a Senate candidate in Missouri, he’s picked up two prominent endorsers. Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum and prominent conservative Sen. Jim DeMint offered their backing Wednesday morning in an e-mail to supporters of Santorum’s group Patriot Voices. The two issued a joint statement: “If Republicans are to win back the Senate and stop President Obama’s liberal agenda, we must defeat Senator Claire McCaskill in Missouri. Her support of President Obama’s job-killing, big-spending policies are sending our country into an economic abyss.

The good news is that high school students don’t bow down to a liberal government and get pushed around without expressing their concerns – at least when it comes to getting their fill at lunch time. Their voice is loud and strong when they are rebelling for the right to eat. The bad news is that the United States Department of Agriculture and First Lady Michelle Obama may be a tough team for the young people to cross. But from reports, there is a sizable group of high school athletes expressing their concern regarding the food

Advocates of "clean coal," hopeful of pushing their cause at Obama-Biden campaign events, say that organizers have confiscated T-shirts, hats and signs and harassed supporters. At a Chesterfield, Virginia rally Tuesday for Vice President Biden, clean coal supporters said that their T-shirts, hats and signs were taken as they passed through security. Others said that they were barred from entering after an official who had earlier confiscated clean coal T-shirts called it a "private event." Wednesday at a rally for President Obama in Bowling Green, Ohio, clean coal advocates in their T-shirts and hats were asked to leave

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton said Tuesday he does not trust Tehran's assertions that it is not pursuing a nuclear weapon, and he urged the international community to pressure Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to allow inspectors to verify his claims. "What they're really saying is, in spite of the fact that we deny the Holocaust, that we threaten Israel, and we demonize the United States, and we do all this stuff, we want you to trust us," Clinton told CNN's Piers Morgan in an interview to air Tuesday night. "They don't have a tenable position."

Four powerful Republican senators are demanding answers to questions they posited to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in early August regarding the apparent watering down of immigration regulations which prohibit those seeking residency or citizenship from being primarily reliant on welfare, or a public charge. The Department of Homeland Security missed the Aug. 20 deadline and has yet to respond. Also addressed in the initial letter was Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The State Department did respond, claiming that the majority of the inquiry fell under the purview of DHS.

Fact check shows Obama’s

An independent watchdog this morning examined President Barack Obama’s claim that 90 percent of the deficit can be blamed on someone else’s policies, and ruled it false. Obama, in a telephone interview with The Des Moines Register yesterday, said: “When you look at why the debt exploded under my watch, it’s because somebody else ran the tab before I got into office. Essentially 90 percent of the increase in debt is two wars on a credit card, two tax cuts that weren’t paid for, a prescription drug plan that was not paid for and a massive recession that required extraordinary measures

Greek police have fired tear gas to disperse anarchists throwing petrol bombs near parliament in Athens. Dozens were arrested during the one-day strike against planned spending cuts of 11.5bn euros ($15bn; £9bn). It was the first union-led action since a conservative-led coalition came to power in June. The savings are a pre-condition to Greece receiving its next tranche of bailout funds, without which the country could face bankruptcy in weeks. Greece needs the next 31bn-euro instalment of its international bailout, but with record unemployment and a third of Greeks pushed below the poverty line, there is strong resistance to further

The growth of the Hispanic population in California could reach a new milestone as early as 2013, an analysis of Census data shows. By next year, immigrants and their descendants from Central and South America could become the biggest ethnic group in the country's most populous state - surpassing whites for the first time. But Hispanics still trail other ethnic groups in important aspects of society. They are underrepresented among university graduates and Hispanic business owners are more likely to file for bankruptcy. The BBC went to southern California to hear experts talk about where the Hispanic community stands.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaks at the United Nations today, which also happens to be Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. The timing is apt because when it comes to Iran and Israel, the hardest thing for some people to see or hear is what Iranian leaders say in front of the world's nose. "Iran has been around for the last seven, 10 thousand years. They [the Israelis] have been occupying those territories for the last 60 to 70 years, with the support and force of the Westerners. They have no roots there in history," Mr. Ahmadinejad told reporters and editors in New York on Monday.

Obama's lead is built on race,

This presidential election breaks the golden rule in that it isn’t being decided by the economy. Despite all the miserable news about jobs and debt, Obama continues to build a lead over Romney. To explain why, Democrats argue that their guy is “on the right side of history”--that he’s winning simply because he’s right. The Romney camp tends to pin it on press bias and bad poll sampling. Neither explanation speaks to the race, class and gender revolution that’s reshaping US politics. In an odd way, this is an identity politics election. Thomas Edsall has an article

Ever the Artful Dodger of Politics, President Barack Hussein Obama was a one-day wonder at this year’s perfectly useless UN General Assembly. Just one day later, the uncrowned King of the World has been pushed off the front page by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who says New World Order is needed to get away from US dominance. “Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that a new world order needs to emerge, away from years of what he called American bullying and domination.”

One of the more lamented aspects of the American political culture is how divided the media has become with the proliferation of cable news, the Internet and talk radio. But if that current environment is viewed with some historical perspective, according to Washington Post columnist George Will, it doesn’t seem so bad. In an appearance on WNYC’s “Here’s the Thing” podcast with Alec Baldwin (yes, that Alec Baldwin), Will explained why rough-and-tumble politics has always been with us, and the media is not wholly to blame for today’s coarse political discourse. “[L]ook, 30 years ago – CNN was founded

The Oval Office isn’t the place to learn on the job. That was the line from both Hillary Clinton and John McCain in 2008. In fairness, that’s always the argument the more experienced candidate uses against the less experienced candidate (just ask Mitt Romney). But Barack Obama seemed a special case, easily among the least experienced major-party nominees in U.S. history. A Pew poll in August 2008, found that the biggest concern voters had with Obama fell under the category of “personal abilities and experience.” In a “change” year, Americans swallowed those concerns and voted for the change candidate.

Biggs is the voice of Leonardo in an animated rendition of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” which premieres Saturday Sept. 29 on Nickelodeon. Biggs made headlines when he tweeted nasty, graphic sexual language about Janna Ryan and Ann Romney. Yet Nickelodeon linked to Biggs’ twitter feed even though the “American Pie” actor’s opinions are nowhere near kid-friendly or appropriate. After being rebuked for his despicable actions Biggs

Last night, radio host Mark Levin described the Department of Agriculture and Michelle Obama's new school lunch regulations as "tyranny." Levin was discussing an article that stated many high school athletes and students are not getting enough food each day and are throwing away food because of the mandates instituted this year by the Department of Agriculture. "But I think Michelle Obama is the new Eva Peron with her lunch standards," Levin said. "Like she knows something about this. She knows as much as I do. Eat carrots and celery. Yum, yum. "But I'm gonna tell you something.
