New York - A quiet day on Wall Street turned into the worst sell-off in three months after a Federal Reserve official said he doubted the bank's effort to boost economic growth would work. Charles Plosser, president of the Fed's Philadelphia branch, told an audience Tuesday that the Fed's effort to support the economy would likely fall short of its goals. The speech probably startled some investors who had faith in the Fed's latest plan, said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer Harris Private Bank. The plan includes buying $40 billion in mortgage bonds each month until the economy improves. "So

MEDINAH, Illinois - Tiger Woods may be the greatest golfer of his generation but at the Ryder Cup he has been Joe Average and on Tuesday accepted responsibility for the dismal U.S. showing for the past 15 years. During a period where Woods reigned supreme over the golf world winning 74 PGA Tour titles, including 14 majors, he has been unable to extend his dominance to the biennial competition that pits the U.S. best against Europe's best. A mediocre 13-14-2 mark from six Ryder Cups does not enhance the brilliance resume of Woods, who has been able to celebrate

Despite calls from Republican Party leaders to step down, Rep. Todd Akin announced he will remain in the Missouri Senate race against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. Tuesday marked the final day on which the embattled Republican could remove his name from the ballot. Akin has fought calls for him to exit the race since he said that victims of what he called "legitimate rape" could not become pregnant. He later apologized and said he used a poor choice of words, but not before the National Republican Senatorial Committee withdrew its support for his candidacy and outside spending groups pulled ads

NEW YORK—Mitt Romney is bringing out some well-known names to join him for his bus tour through Ohio Wednesday. According to his campaign, Romney will hold a rally Wednesday morning in Westerville, Ohio, with golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who is from the area. He'll follow that event in a "manufacturing round table" with Mike Rowe, host of the Discovery Channel show "Dirty Jobs." It's unclear if Rowe is backing Romney in the race, but the appearance comes just weeks after the television host sent Romney an open letter encouraging him to talk more about skilled labor jobs

IRVING, Texas — Former President George W. Bush has wrapped up a two-day golf tournament for wounded U.S. military members. Bush presented the winner's trophy Tuesday to former U.S. Army Cpl. Chad Pfeifer, who also won last year's inaugural Warrior Open tournament. Bush, who had watched as Pfeifer made a hole-in-one, told him: "On behalf of a lot of grateful citizens, congratulations." Pfeifer's leg was amputated above the knee after his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Iraq in 2007. He now works at a golf course in Arizona.

VANDALIA, Ohio – Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney stepped off a plane here Tuesday and into what might be a make-or-break phase of his fall campaign. (Snip) Romney, who for months has prefaced criticism of President Barack Obama by calling the Democratic incumbent a nice guy, abandoned all pretense in his 18-minute speech. As the rock star Cooper once famously announced in song: "No more Mr. Nice Guy." “This is a vision of government that’s entirely foreign to anything this nation has ever known,” Romney told the crowd gathered near the edge of Dayton International Airport.

Hailing a “season of progress” in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, President Barack Obama told the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday that Americans see themselves in the protests that swept the Arab world: “We were inspired by the Tunisian protests that toppled a dictator, because we recognized our own beliefs in the aspirations of men and women who took to the streets,” Obama said. “We insisted on change in Egypt, because our support for democracy put us on the side of the people.” As CNSNews.com reported in March, Tunisian lawmakers -- trying to draft a new constitution -- are now

Seoul - New satellite imagery shows North Korea has halted work at a launch pad capable of testing intercontinental missiles, possibly setting the project back by up to two years, a US website reported on Tuesday. The commercial satellite images taken on 29 August also show construction postponed on crucial fuel and oxidiser buildings designed to support future tests near the new pad, the 38 North website said. "The slowdown, barring concerted North Korean efforts to make up for lost time, could result in a 1-2 year slip in the planned completion date of the new complex," it said

Over the years, I've generally had little patience when partisans make the "polls are wrong" argument. I've usually found it to be the last refuge of campaigns which were clearly struggling. (Snip) This year, however, is different. The overwhelming majority of media polling this election employ such absurd assumptions about turnout this November that they not only misrepresent the presidential race, they are actively distorting it. I also believe it is intentional. In 2008, the electorate that elected Barack Obama was 39% Democrat, 32% GOP and 29% Independent. This is what we call a D+7 electorate. Obama defeated McCain by 7

Harrisburg - The Pennsylvania judge who last month upheld a law requiring voters to show photo identification heard testimony today from officials on whether the state’s process for implementing the statute will allow people to comply before the general election in November. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Sept. 18 ordered Commonwealth Judge Robert E. Simpson to consider whether all eligible voters will be able to obtain acceptable ID if the law is upheld. Simpson ruled Aug. 15 that plaintiffs including the American Civil Liberties Union hadn’t proved the law would disenfranchise voters. The state high court asked Simpson to submit

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Plastic and foam food containers are everywhere in this enterprising Caribbean nation — clogging canals, cluttering streets and choking ocean wildlife. Now those pesky black plastic bags made of polyethylene and polystyrene foam cups, plates, trays and other containers that have become as ubiquitous as the vendors who peddle them in street markets are on their way out. Haiti’s government has announced a ban on importing, manufacturing and marketing them as of Oct. 1. “This is a logical decision and makes sense,” Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe said. “Importing, manufacturing bio-degradable items will benefit
