On Monday, Mitt Romney made an innocent comment at a rally in California that is being taken way too seriously by the mainstream media.[Snip] Cue howls of laughter and derision by the pundits, who seem genuinely to think that Mitt Romney reckons you should be allowed to wind down a window at 30,000 feet. Rachel Maddow--showing off her sciencey credentials--even replayed that clip from Goldfinger where the villain gets sucked out of an airplane. Maddow pointed out that even if it was a gag, Romney was joking about his wife’s near death experience--and that makes him a bad human being.

On August 10 this year Lance Cpl. Greg Buckley Jr. was murdered by an Afghan police officer "trainee" in the Helmand Province of southern Afghanistan. The 21 year old Buckley was working out in a gym when the Afghan officer walked in with an AK-47 and discharged the weapon into the unarmed Marine's chest. Earlier in the year, Buckley was told by a superior officer to apologize to the Afghan trainee after the pair had a dispute over the American presence in Afghanistan. The dispute occurred after the Afghan officer repeatedly pestered and harassed Buckley

Stephanie Cutter, the deputy campaign manager for President Barack Obama, said in an interview Monday that she stood by all of the president's television ads, despite the assertion from Obama himself that some of the spots have gone "overboard." "Absolutely, absolutely," Cutter said on CNN's "The Situation Room" when asked if she could back all of Obama's campaign ads. (Snip) In an unaired portion of Obama's "60 Minutes" interview, the president admitted that sometimes political ads, even from his own campaign, go too far. "Do we see sometimes us going overboard in our campaign, the mistakes that

ABC News’ Jake Tapper paid a visit to Greta Van Susteren on Monday night to discuss President Barack Obama‘s decision not to meet with world leaders while the United Nations General Assembly is in New York City. Many have critically pointed to the timing of his appearance on The View. Tapper noted that it was indeed an “unusual” move for the president — and that it reveals “friction” with the Israeli prime minister. Tapper said it was an “anomaly” for the president to forego meeting with world leaders, and that “there

MEDINAH, Ill.—Top U.S. pro golfers facing off against Europe's elite in this weekend's Ryder Cup at the course here will wield the latest in custom-made, high-tech gear. But one American has been on a clandestine mission for months at Medinah Country Club, looking to give the home team a lift: He is using grass mowers, fertilizer spreaders and gardening hoses. "I don't want to give away any valuable team secrets," said Curtis Tyrrell, director of golf-course operations at the country club outside Chicago. "There is a mission at hand." Most golf tournaments are individual affairs, but the Ryder Cup—

In early August, with our Republican analysis of the POLITICO-George Washington University Battleground Poll, we wrote “… this election will remain close until the final weeks of the campaign. There will be ups and downs for both campaigns throughout the next 13 weeks, but the basic dynamics that are driving this electorate and framing this election remain well in place.” Two conventions, and tens of millions of campaign dollars later, we continue to hold that belief.

Karl Rove's commentary on this week's Electoral Map updates: "Seven states changed status since last week's Electoral College map, with four moving in Mitt Romney's direction and only three moving toward Barack Obama. Mr. Romney saw Georgia move from 'lean' to 'safe' Romney, New Hampshire change from 'lean' Obama to 'toss up,' and New Mexico and Pennsylvania both shift from 'safe' to 'lean' Obama.

President Obama held 13 meetings with world leaders at last year's United Nations summit but this time around none are scheduled - instead, he and his wife Michelle are heading to see the women of The View, where he joked he would serve as 'eye candy' for the audience. Obama will deliver a speech to the UN annual assembly on Tuesday but will be leaving the the one-on-one meetings to Hillary Clinton, his Secretary of State. Critics have charged that Obama is suddenly vulnerable on foreign policy after the wave of violence in the Middle East

For Americans of the Greatest Generation that fought World War II and of the Silent Generation that came of age in the 1950s, the great moral and ideological cause was the Cold War. It gave purpose and clarity to our politics and foreign policy, and our lives. From the fall of Berlin in 1945 to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, that Cold War was waged by two generations, and with its end Americans faced a fundamental question: If the historic struggle between communism and freedom is over, if the Soviet Empire and Soviet Union no longer exist

President Barack Obama promised that Obamacare would cut family health insurance premiums by $2,500 by the end of the first term--but instead they have risen by $3,000, according to a new Kaiser Family Foundation study cited by Investor’s Business Daily. The cost of health insurance today is more than 50% higher than Obama promised it would be--and the costs are expected to continue to rise as Obamacare is impemented. John Merline of Investor's Business Daily notes the rising costs specifically contradict a campaign promise Obama reiterated several times

Players, fans and the media alike are freaking out over the controversial end of the Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks. Now, Jack Dickey at Deadspin has a spectacular little detail about some of the NFL replacement refs. The Lingerie Football League, which earlier wouldn't offer a comment about a ref who was supposedly fired by the women's league, has something to tell NFL fans. Here's the statement that the LFL gave to Deadspin (emphasis ours): Because of the LFL's perception it is that much more critical for us

It's probably safe to surmise that if, as he did, Barack Obama bothered to set up a formal teleprompter in the manure-sprinkled dirt of a rodeo arena for remarks to a captive crowd back in 2008, he doesn't care much what people think. To be sure, he and his sleeveless wife have followed that pattern consistently during their 1,344 days of White House residency with her mother. He launched a war against Libya without congressional approval, while he took his extended family around South America. Nine days later he consented to explain his military actions.

President Barack Obama is to tell the UN General Assembly the US will "do what we must" to stop Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, officials say. The Middle East is set to dominate the summit in New York and the president will give one of the opening speeches. In an address six weeks before the US presidential election, he is expected to say that a nuclear-armed Iran "is not a challenge that can be contained". He is also set to condemn the violence that erupted over an anti-Islam video. In a tribute to the US ambassador to Libya murdered in Benghazi

Let's get this straight. Barack Obama never knew a life of financial hardship. Ditto for Michelle. But the First Couple keeps bringing up their impoverished childhoods and student loan debts in stump speeches. In 2008 Obama reeled in the MTV crowd with an unproven spiel about how he and Michelle's first mortgage was less than their monthly loan payments.(snip)Obama's tale of being raised by a "teenage" mother on food stamps and getting all the way through Harvard Law on student loans is playing again across America.

Mitt Romney is winning the battle for middle-class voters in the race for the White House despite a string of gaffes. With even some Republicans turning on their candidate, there is a general perception in Washington that multi-millionaire Mr Romney is out of touch with ordinary Americans who believe he will only help the rich. But according to a poll, he has a 14 percentage point lead over Barack Obama among middle-class families. Although Mr Obama leads by three percent overall in the poll, middle-class voters constitute 54 percent of the electorate and are the ultimate target group

Cats and dogs aren't traditionally known for being the best of buddies, but something maternal just clicked in Mittens, a 4-year-old Pekingese, when she encountered a stray gray kitten called Bootsie. Mittens’ owner Pat Weber says she was shocked when her small dog began caring for the abandoned kitten, then started producing milk and nursing the fuzzy baby back to health. The kitten was just days old when Pat's grandson found it in the family's barn in early September in Jordan, about 40 miles southwest of Minneapolis. The two-inch-long kitten was 'ice cold' and the family wasn't sure if

NEW YORK - Campaign politics shadowing every word, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will challenge the world to confront the root causes of rage exploding across the Muslim world, calling it a defining choice "between the forces that would drive us apart and the hopes we hold in common." Obama will step before the United Nations General Assembly and declare that the United States will not shrink from its role in troubled, transitioning nations despite the killing of four Americans in Libya, including U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens, and more than 50 people total in violence

New rules on school meals inspired by Michelle Obama were intended to wipe out hunger and malnutrition among American students--but some are complaining they have had the opposite effect. High schools are now forbidden from giving pupils more than 850 calories for their lunch--even if they are fast-growing teenagers or even student athletes. One enterprising group of adolescents channelled their anger at the policy into a parody YouTube video promoting their cause entitled 'We Are Hungry'. The new restrictions were mandated by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, signed into law during the lame-duck period of the last Congress

NBC's $25million man may be forced to take a dramatic cut in pay if the Today show viewership continues to fall. Plagued by plummeting ratings and a declining personal favorability, Matt Lauer may be asked to sacrifice his huge NBC paycheck if the Today show's situation doesn't improve. The morning show is taking a major hit in viewership following the tearful departure of former co-host Ann Curry in June. The network is now reportedly examining whether Lauer is worth what he's being paid. A source close to the situation told Radar Online: 'Matt Lauer will be asked to take

Like many razor-sharp 86-year-olds, the Queen must spend an awful lot of time wondering what the hell became of the Britain she knew in her youth, and of all those commonsense values and that basic decency which saw us through trials like the Second World War. And when they do, my how you wish she was actually running the country herself rather than leaving it to idiots like her useless fifth cousin Dave. Take her views on the

When darkness falls this evening, Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement)--the holiest day of the Jewish calendar--will begin. It is believed that the strength of one’s prayers and repentance on Yom Kippur will determine who is written in the “Book of Life” and who in the “Book of Death”, as well as “who will rest and who will wander, who will live in harmony and who will be harried … who will be degraded and who will be exalted.” The intense spirit of of Yom Kippur is captured within its liturgy; Jacqueline du Pre’s heartrending rendition of the

Hey, Obama Lovers, now that our Ambassador is dead, our Benghazi consulate is a smoldering ruin, and its top secret documents have been snatched by Al Qaeda, do you still think your hero's Libyan war is a smashing success? Because I sure do. Not from America's point of view, of course; it's a nightmare for our national security. But from the perspective of Obama's biggest donor, the convicted felon and renowned Israel-hater George Soros, the Libyan War is a triumph. Why? Because Obama waged it illegally

Here are three pieces from this morning's press worth reading on wealth/mansion taxes. No doubt there are many more, but these are the ones I've got through. First and foremost, there's my own--obviously--which argues that the Lib Dems will inevitably end up attacking middle class wealth and income if they go this route. A surprisingly large number of people now fall into upper income and even wealth brackets at some stage in their lives. A not dissimilar point is made by Dominic Lawson in The Independent. He points to Centre for Policy Studies research, which shows that

A look at the top two presidential election polls listed at Real Clear Politics on Sunday morning showed the race between Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney in a dead heat. The first, the daily tracking poll at Rasmussen – the most accurate presidential pollster in the 2008 presidential contest — had the 2012 race knotted at 46%.
