This past week, a black mother in Baltimore discovered her 16-year-old son, covered by a hoodie and a mask, participating in the riot that shook the city. So she chased him down, cursed him and beat him as a bystander captured the scene on video. Once it was posted, the consensus online, in social media and on cable TV held her up as a hero. A still from the video graced the cover of the New York Post with this headline: “Forget the National Guard .?.?. send in the moms.” In this country, when black mothers fulfill stereotypes of mammies,

The death of Freddie Gray has been ruled a homicide caused by severe trauma. Gray, 25, was taken into police custody in Baltimore on April 12 and sustained a spinal injury during that time that required medical attention. He went into a coma several days later and died a week after his apprehension. Police have never said why they took him into custody in the first place, noting only that he ran from officers, and they have not publicly explained how Gray received the spinal injury. Violent protests rocked Baltimore on Monday afternoon and through the night, prompting hundreds of

The six officers accused in the death of Freddie Gray face a litany of charges that include second-degree depraved-heart murder, involuntary manslaughter, false imprisonment and misconduct in office. The officers — three white, three African American — represent a broad spectrum of experience on Baltimore’s police force. Three of them joined the force three years ago. The driver, who faces the most serious charges, is African American and has been on the force since 1999. One officer had his weapons confiscated after a former girlfriend contacted the Carroll County sheriff’s office to say she feared for his safety. The officers

BALTIMORE — IN the wake of the Michael Brown shooting and subsequent unrest in Ferguson, Mo., commentators noted the absence of black representatives among Ferguson’s elected officials and its police leadership. A Department of Justice report highlighted how Ferguson’s mostly white City Council and its courts spurred on explicitly racist policing, in part to harvest fines from black residents. Then came Baltimore. The death of Freddie Gray, like those of Eric Garner, John Crawford III, Rekia Boyd and so many other unarmed African-Americans, at first seemed to fit the all-too-familiar template — white cops, black suspect, black corpse.

Why Do So Many People Hate the
Sound of Hillary Clinton´s Voice?

You know Hillary Clinton’s voice, right? I mean, you know it. It’s just so loud and annoying. Or maybe it´s like a nagging wife. Or inauthentic—that phony Southern accent! Those flat Midwestern vowels! Whatever it is, her voice is burned into your brain. Now think of Jeb Bush’s voice. It’s so—wait, what does it sound like again? He sounds just ... like a guy, maybe? It´s probably hard for you to recall distinguishing features about most of the Republican candidates. (Snip)If you watch old clips of Clinton from the 1992 campaign, she is presenting herself in a much more feminine

As Clinton scandals continue to mount and her credibility plummets, gleeful Republicans are quietly discussing what once seemed impossible: Hillary Clinton might not survive primary season, let alone make it all the way to Pennsylvania Avenue. That may well turn out to be the case. But it’s not because of the allegations about “Clinton cash” or deleted emails. Those are major political scandals, to be sure, but of a kind that a shameless Bill Clinton skated through easily during his own administration. The deeper problem is personal. As the veteran Democratic strategist Bob Shrum put it to me, rather forlornly, in an

This is the first officer to be pictured out of the six cops charged over the death of Freddie Gray. Officer Edward Nero, 29, is facing 10 years in jail for allegedly assaulting the 25-year-old before he suffered a severe spine injury and died. The married father-of-one, who is also charged with misconduct in public office, joined the Baltimore Police Department in 2012. He will face trial alongside five colleagues, whose charges range from assault to manslaughter and murder, after the Maryland State´s Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, declared Gray´s death was a homicide, and there is probable cause to file criminal
