FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - An Army psychiatrist who authorities say went on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood was so conflicted over what to tell fellow soldiers about fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan that a local Islamic leader said Saturday he was deeply troubled by it. Osman Danquah, co-founder of the Islamic Community of Greater Killeen, said he was disturbed by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's persistent questioning and recommended the mosque reject Hasan's request

Huge and enthusiastic turnout last night at the Wisconsin Right to Life event for Sarah Palin. (Snip) Listening to her last night I was reminded of how powerfully she presents herself when she is not being filtered by the MSM. Remember her acceptance speech? Her handling of Joe Biden in the debate? Take away the snarky anchors and condescending pundits and Sarah Palin reminds one of the most interesting figures on the pilitical stage today.

Barely 24 hours after the massacre at the Fort Hood Army Base, the lines were drawn: On one side are those who believe the shooting was the act of a madman and that emphasizing his Muslim identity is irresponsible. On the other side are those who insist this was an act of terrorism and that the suspect's religious affiliation is central to the story. This is familiar ground.

For a person with old-fashioned values, and an old-fashioned sense of English word meanings, the reports of the Fort Hood massacre were almost as provoking as what happened there. (Snip) What happened at Fort Hood was no kind of "tragedy." It was a criminal act, of the terrorist sort, performed by a man acting upon known Islamist motives. To present the perpetrator himself as a kind of "victim"

House Democrats reached an agreement on a contentious abortion provision overnight that appears to clear the way for a final vote on health care legislation today. The agreement will allow a vote on an amendment, authored by Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., and Rep. Brad Ellsworth, D-Ind., that would bar funds going toward abortion under both the public option and any private plans that participate in the new insurance exchange.

In the comedy, Analyze This, psychiatrist Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal) finds himself to be psychological nursemaid for mafia boss man Paul Vitti (Robert DeNiro). The various humor scenes throughout the movie build off the violent life of DeNiro contrasted with the cerebral and passive world of Crystal and his psychiatry. Because psychiatrists are scientists of diagnosing and treating mental disorders, we are lead to believe they should have better control over their own actions. We

Most Democratic advocates of abortion rights appear likely to swallow hard and vote for a health care overhaul even though it is likely to include an amendment that would effectively bar insurers that participate in a public exchange from providing most abortions, according to several lawmakers who attended a private meeting on the topic Saturday morning in the Capitol basement. Asked whether her allies in the pro-choice movement would support the bill with the language offered

This hasn't gotten half the play it should have and for good reason; President Obama's weird, off-putting introduction to his remarks about the Fort Hood massacre reveal him to be something of a cold fish. Obama's shocking insensitivity was first noticed by Robert George writing in the president's home town TV news station WMAQ: After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the

Conservatives have been quick to trumpet the fact that the alleged killer at Fort Hood, Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, is a Muslim--the implication being that Muslims are inherently untrustworthy, hostile to America, at odds with civilized norms of behavior or something. (Snip) It may be that Hasan subscribed to a jihadist ideology that drove him to kill his fellow soldiers. But it could be that Islam is just a distraction from more fundamental problems

When Harry S. Truman was sworn in to office, his poker buddies from the previous war were afraid he might stop playing now that he had been "promoted." They need not have worried. The new chief executive even requisitioned a set of chips embossed with the presidential seal for use in the White House, though he tried to avoid being photographed gambling on its premises.
