The deepening and widening of the Panama Canal will have a ripple effect on shipping throughout the world, but what happens in Texas depends on the various ports, officials said Monday. When larger ships start routinely crossing the canal in 2015, long-haul container ship routes will change because they will be able to make more all-water deliveries, said Rodolfo Sabonge, the canal's vice president for market research and analysis.

Vermont's governor has signed into law the first state ban on a hotly debated natural gas drilling technique called hydraulic fracturing. There's no drilling currently happening in Vermont, which is believed to have little to no reserves of oil or natural gas. Democratic Gov. NEW YORK — Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s estranged wife, Mary Kennedy, who had fought drug and alcohol problems, was found dead in her home Wednesday. Attorney Kerry Lawrence, who had represented her in a drunken-driving case, said he didn't know the cause of her death at age 52. Police confirmed a body was found on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s property in Bedford, north of New York City, but wouldn't release the dead person's name. Mary Kennedy's family cited her devotion to her four children in remembering her.

Mary Kennedy, ex-wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was found dead at her New York home Wednesday, a source told the Associated Press. Kerry Lawrence, an attorney, confirmed her death, but did not know the cause. The Bedford, N.Y. police department said that at approximately 1:36 p.m. they responded to a call about a deceased individual found at the Kennedys' home. Washington - U.S. Army leaders have begun to study the prospect of sending female soldiers to the service's prestigious Ranger school -- another step in the effort to broaden opportunities for women in the military. Gen. Raymond Odierno, Army chief of staff, said Monday that he's asked senior commanders to provide him with recommendations and a plan this summer. Skechers USA Inc.has agreed to pay $40 million to settle charges by federal officials that it deceived consumers by making unfounded claims about the health benefits of its rocker-bottomed shoes, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said Wednesday. They blame the chemicals used in gas production for health problems ranging from nosebleeds to cancer. And the mayor of Dish, Bill Sciscoe, has a message for people who live in places where gas drilling is about to start: "Run. Run as fast as you can.
