A new study suggests that at least one in seven home kitchens would flunk the kind of health inspection commonly administered to restaurants. The small study done in Los Angeles County found that less than two-thirds of home kitchens would get an A or B if put through the rigors of a restaurant inspection. At least 14 percent would fail.

House Democrats are touting their work during the August recess, claiming their members held 1,800 district events to promote their accomplishments and bash Republicans. The frenzied pace is a response to the growing sentiment among the political class that the Democrats’ majority is in danger this November. The party hopes to argue that the doomsday predictions in Washington do not reflect the reality across the country, where they say their candidates are gaining traction.

On his first visit back to the White House after leaving the presidency, George W. Bush sat in the Oval Office with his successor, President Obama, for a briefing on the earthquake in Haiti. It was January 2010 — nearly a year to the day after Mr. Bush left office — and it seemed, at the time, like a door might be opening between the two men. But the door, it seems, has remained closed.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Thursday he's confident he will remain in that position when new senators head to Washington next year.McConnell, who's served as Senate GOP leader since early 2007, said he's already locked up enough votes to remain in the top position.(Snip) Still, many of the Republican candidates the party needs to win this fall have unseated some incumbent GOP senators in primaries, raising the fear that those new members might be less loyal to party leadership.

Tax Dollars for Muslims

The Obama Administration reportedly held a special workshop this week to help leaders of controversial Muslim groups acquire “direct access” to taxpayer funding for their activities. The event’s main organizer, the Coordinating Council of Muslim Organizations (CCMO) has long-established ties to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, which fostered many Islamist terror groups. Some of CCMO’s member groups were unindicted co-conspirators in the successfully prosecuted terrorist funding trial against the Holy Land Foundation (HLF). Event organizers said they would dedicate themselves to “cutting through red tape” to provide “direct access” to U.S. taxpayer funding for these terrorist funding-related groups.

Glenn Beck: Universities

Last night, Glenn Beck had a textbook Glenn Beck-style address in which he hyperbolically dug into both progressive universities and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius within the same 30 seconds.Target 1: Universities. There was a time not too long ago in this country that we used to walk through walls of fire to make sure we weren’t funding Hamas or Hezbollah. I have news for you: there are a lot of universities that are just as dangerous with indoctrination of our children as these terror groups are in Iran or North Korea.

With stories like The Daily Caller’s JournoList scoops and Big Government’s Shirley Sherrod video, a new generation of conservative news websites have driven traffic this summer, so it didn’t come as a huge surprise that Glenn Beck, fresh from staging a march on Washington, announced he was getting in on the action and launching one of his own. After all, with President Barack Obama’s job approval ratings slipping to the low 40s and Republicans poised to make big gains in November, it’s a good time to be right-leaning on the web.

With not a lot of fanfare, Glenn Beck booked Anchorage's Dena'ina for a September 11 event with no announced program. When I first heard about the event, it was from Palin-watching liberals who assumed -- correctly, it turns out -- that the former governor would attend the rally. (Snip) Instead, I think you're going to see a sequel to Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally. Like I noted in my article on that rally, it wasn't overtly political for the same reasons that his paid speeches aren't overtly political.

GOP Poised To Add 5 To 7

Right now Democrats control 26 governorships while Republicans control 24. That is almost certain to flip to the GOP’s advantage after Nov. 2, probably by a wide margin. Assuming that the Republicans are likely to flip a Democrat-held seat in a race where the GOP candidate has led in the last three polls, then they seem poised to move into governor’s mansions in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Despite all the worry about the sluggish US economy, businesses and investors are finding an even bigger reason to be cautious these days: the political mess in Washington. "Businesses—especially smaller businesses, independent businesses—they don't know what their cost structures are going to be because of government-imposed changes," David Kotok, founder of Cumberland Advisors, said on CNBC this week. "Half the US economy's holding back because of this great uncertainty that's coming from Washington."

The stimulus law, signed by President Barack Obama in February 2009, authorized $1.1 billion for research on what medical treatments work best for which people. On Wednesday, the Health and Human Services Department announced that $17 million of that taxpayer money will be used to establish a network of PCOR centers. PCOR stands for “patient-centered outcomes research,” also known as “comparative effectiveness research.” HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said patient-centered outcomes research “can improve health outcomes” by developing “evidence-based information” about the effectiveness of different treatments.

James Lee, the crazed environmentalist that took hostages at Discovery Channel's Maryland headquarters only to be shot and killed by police Wednesday, was "awakened" by Nobel Laureate Al Gore's schlockumentary "An Inconvenient Truth." As readers are likely aware, armed with several bombs, Lee took three hostages at the Silver Springs facility. When negotiations broke down, police stormed the building killing the gunman (see Eyeblast reports here and here). Before the incident began, Lee posted the following demands at his website savetheplanetprotest.com:

The leader of the Ground Zero mosque got hugely valuable tax-exempt status for a Muslim organization he founded after claiming as many as 500 of its members prayed daily in a small, one-bedroom Upper West Side apartment also listed as his wife's residence, The Post has learned. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf sought "church status" -- an official IRS term for a house of worship of any religion -- for the American Sufi Muslim Association, or ASMA, in 1998. The feds granted the request. "Church status" is more than just an exemption --

Remember that iftar dinner the president sponsored? The dinner that got him in trouble because he came out in strong support of the mega-mosque at Ground Zero, support from which he backed away the very next day? Well, it turns out he delivered another blatant lie at that dinner, one that slipped under the radar because his support of the Ground Zero Mosque was so controversial. In his remarks at the iftar observance, Obama claimed that the “first” iftar dinner in the White House was hosted by Thomas Jefferson.

WASHINGTON -- By insisting Tuesday evening that "it's time to turn the page," President Obama was talking about more than the Iraq War, and doing much more than reviving one of his most effective slogans from the 2008 campaign. He was also trying to turn the page on a period in which he has found himself on the defensive, his party in a perilous position for November's elections, and his reputation for political mastery in doubt. Obama's Oval Office speech was resolutely nonpolitical in form but profoundly political in its implications.

WASHINGTON — Rep. "I never heard the rules even discussed," she told KRLD-AM (1080). "I can't really blame anyone. I could have researched them myself. But the rules just came to me. One sheet came last year, which I didn't read well, which was my mistake. They were really very ambiguous rules."

Gallup is out this week with a new poll showing the generic Republican beating the generic Democrat in House contests by 10 points. The gap, Gallup points out, is the biggest one it has seen in midterm generic polls since it started doing them. It is substantially larger than the gap in 1994, when Republicans took control of the House in the first midterm election of the last Democratic president, Bill Clinton. Does that mean it's time for Republicans to start picking the drapes for their new leadership offices? Should Nancy Pelosi be packing up her gavel? Not so fast.

Obama delivered a speech about a war that he exploited for political advantage during the election, and ignored the rest of the time. A war that he tried to sabotage as a Senator, and neglected once in the White House. Where Bush conducted constant conferences with commanders in the field, Obama has let the clashing egos of former Clinton Administration staffers, and a few imported radicals, determine how the war will be conducted. Of all the charges leveled at Bush over the war, he could never be accused of just not giving a damn. Yet that is exactly the case with Obama. Staff added text

Why would the former chairman of the Republican National Committee — he ran the GOP for six years during Reagan’s presidency — endorse Democrat Harry Reid in a dead-heat election? Because that GOP bigwig is from the K Street Wing of the Republican Party. Frank Fahrenkopf is now head of the American Gaming Association, the gambling industry’s lobby. This cycle, like last cycle, Fahrenkopf has funded Reid’s reelection. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports on a recent Fahrenkopf speech:

In perilous times, it is wise to know the demons we face. Some have claimed that James Lee, the gunman and hostage killed by police yesterday at the Discovery Channel building, was a terrorist. They point to his writings about the need to save the planet from global warming and his rage that the Discovery Channel has been airing what he considered frivolous programming, while multiple species on the planet face extinction and others—like ants and squirrels—suffer needlessly. We would be lucky if the terrorists we really face were as chaotic and easily identifiable as James Lee.
