President Joe Biden will use special wartime powers to boost US production of heat pumps, by funding nine manufacturing projects with $169 million from last year's climate bill, the Energy Department said on Friday.
The awards were granted under the emergency authority of the Cold War-era Defense Production Act (DPA), which Biden invoked on the basis of climate change to boost spending on clean energy technology.
'The President is using his wartime emergency powers under the Defense Production Act to turbocharge US manufacturing of clean technologies and strengthen our energy security,' said Biden's National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi

A heat pump is essentially an air conditioner running in reverse. They dont work when it gets cold enough to need a heater. So of course, the government is backing them.
Tell the dumps to get ready for the increased junk.

When i built my house i looked into a heat pump. Too expensive for me. I do hear they’re efficient. I know people who have them- very very expensive homes. They’re a rich person’s hobby, so of course Big Bidet is paying for them. Does he subsidize private jets too?

Agree with #2. Inflicting pain on Americans seems to be the prime directive of this administration.
Heat pumps are already gaining in popularity and we are told they are in short supply. So why is Biden subsidizing the corporations that make them, even building a plant from the ground up for Mitsubishi? Would it not be in the interest of each corporation to increase production to meet consumer needs? Are we to believe the only way to ramp up production is for government to give massive subsidies to corporations? If heat pumps are the wave of the future (I like both of mine) the producers will ramp up production because it's in their own interest. New manufacturers will want to get in on the competition. Given the deplorable state of our nation right now, any subsidies should be for taxpayers replacing their old systems. This administration has far too many corporate "partners" participating in fleecing taxpayers with the help of their establishment lobbyists.

#1, I disagree with your first sentence. I've had a residential heat pump for several years. Admittedly, it took me several months to clear my mind and understand what a heat pump does. Just as labeled it pumps heat from the outside air into the residence when it is cool/cold and pumps heat from the residence to the outside air when it is warm/hot. Granted it begins to lose effectiveness when the outside air drops to and below 20º F and some units include electric heaters to address that problem. I'm waiting to see the reaction and action from those who live in really cold climates where the temps drop below zero routinely.

Heat pumps are useless below 25° F. In fact, they lose effectiveness below 40°. Living in part of Florida where it occasionally gets into the 20s, the heat pump needs to run continuously on those nights, and can't keep up. Any further north and an auxiliary heat source (gas burners or electric elements) are required. Last I checked, that's about 99% of the US. Gas is the better choice. The federal government should not be limiting the options of the people.

A heat pump is NOT efficient for this part of the country when from Oct to April we are consistently below 25 during the night (and often below zero) and many times during the day. Also inspite of the drought here, humidity is high. Again not good for a heat pump. Electricity to heat as a back up would break almost everyone's budget. My sister has an all electric house that had 2 fireplaces for supplemental heat. She converted both fireplaces to propane and several of her appliances to get her electric bill down.
So Biden wants the northern half of the country to freeze to death because they won't be able to afford the cost electric back-up heat, besides not being able to afford the heat pump in the first place. Many will go back to heating with wood.

Biden is going to put all vehicles and gas appliances on electricity, when the electric grid will not support current heating and cooling demand. With all this new demand, they will have to triple production and double the distribution lines.

The thing never blows really hot air it blows warmed air, and when it get cold a heat element kicks in and costs a fortune to run. i have hot water heat from a fuel oil furnace and it is great or at least it was before Biden caused the heating fuel price to rise.

We lived in Montana for 33 years and never heard of a heat pump. We had a wood burning stove and a gas furnace in our house. When we had 6 weeks of temps where the highs were -5 degrees, a heat pump would've died instantly. Sorry Joe, I'll keep my gas furnace.

I got stuck with a heat pump in South Carolina. It was never warm when you needed it to be. When I moved to Texas I told the real estate agent, don't even show me a house that doesn't have gas heat.
In Texas I bought a house with a gas stovetop for the first time. I will never cook with electric again.

They don't last any significant time anymore. In 1965 a whole house AC was installed in the house that eventually became mine. It was working fine in 1995 at 30 years old. But I didn't like the noise from the condenser outside my bedroom window. So I had it moved to the far side of the house. But they upsold me a new system. It broke in less than 5 years. "Don't worry it's under warranty." Then it broke again and this time they told me they couldn't fix it because the EPA had outlawed the refrigerant and the 7 year old one is not compatible so I had to buy an entirely new unit. And it broke after 4 years thanks to ECM motors. And also the refrigerant coils start leaking. And the new refrigerant is propane so if it leaks your house will explode.
Washing machines, refrigerators, HVACs... will not last 10 years anymore. It seems like the environmentalists should complain about that. It's not green to replace things all the time.
BTW, there is only a narrow geographical band where heat pumps will work. They still won't save you any money but at least they will work. I just built a house in North Georgia and I had to stomp my foot down to get gas heat put in. But I got it. And the house gets warm real fast whereas with a heat pump it would take all day to get warm.

Heat pumps only function well in moderate to warm climates. We had one when we lived in Virginia and the technician who serviced it told us that we lived at the northernmost point where they would be sufficient to heat and cool a house. And our house, which was 1900 square feet of indoor living space, required two of them. You can bet that neither of Xiden’s homes use them.

My first house had a heat pump. The most worthless piece of crap to heat a house. Heat pumps might be fine if one lives in the south, and have occasional cold spells, but northern climates need oil or gas heat. Something that actually provides heat. I would put my hand over the vent when the heat pump was on, and cold air was coming out. More often than not, at some point during the winter, I would have to go out and remove ice that covered the entire heat pump so it would operate and provide some heat. I insisted that my new house have gas heat. Now when it's 20 degrees or lower, I actually feel heat coming out of the vent, and the house is actually warm.

This is just a trial balloon to see what they can get by with using the Defense Production Act. If this flies (and it probably will), it will be used to close down oil and gas production along with coal at will. It could be used to shut down any industry the Greenies and other Commies want to shut down. That would be especially any small business, or anything that helps people enjoy freedom, food, or warmth. In short, it would be a shortcut to complete and absolute tyranny. Heat pumps are a very minor goal.

My RV's A/C unit quit last summer, repair cost was going to be more than a new one so I ordered a new one with a built in heat pump. Turns out the heat pump only works when it is warm outside, mine blew cold air at 48°F. I would have been better off with the heater coil instead of a heat pump... This whole 'electric' everything is nothing more than a control thing, once restricted to one source of energy that the government controls your behavior is controlled.

This is just BILLIANT! trying to fore everything to run on electrical energy. That way any enemy only has to disrupt the electrical power grid to shut down everything in the country. By making the country dependent on this single source of energy you could not cook food, heat their home, or get their car to move. The electrical grid is so easy to sabotage because it is so exposed. And, at this time, the electrical grid does not have the capacity to meet the increased demand.
What is Biden thinking? Right, he isn’t thinking.

As a custom homebuilder for over 40 years, I've learned that when the government decides to push something, they make it easier to achieve with the building codes. You can have a totally inefficient house, with lots of glass, and lesser than possible insulation levels, if you just install heat pumps and geothermal, and photovoltaic...
