Birth rates in China are in free fall. And the all-powerful Communist Party of China seems powerless to do anything about it.The National Bureau of Statistics reported that only 10.62 million babies were born last year, down from 12.02 million in 2020, and the lowest number in recorded history.
Millennials are the problem — or should I say the generations of only children spawned by the one-child policy. Many Chinese men in their twenties and early thirties seem to have simply given up on life.

FTA - " Many Chinese men in their twenties and early thirties seem to have simply given up on life."
And just we wait until these same male millennials find themselves unemployed when the upcoming financial downturn finally hits. There will be a political crisis in the Peoples Republic beyond belief and Xi and his chicom buddies know it and fear it.

Many of China’s policies were actually formulated by the PLA (Peoples’ Liberation Army). The one-child policy was one of these.

Better that all those men “lay flat” than take out their sexual frustrations by invading other countries looking for brides. Though it may still come to that in the end.

Freedom provides its own checks and balances, but Government power freaks always, always want to control, control, control.

Government control, of the economy, of health care, of peoples' lives, never works. What was the one-child policy really based on? A belief that fewer people would consume/need fewer resources? It's classic socialism/leftist thinking. What works is less regulation, not more. Let people have as many children as they want and let them start businesses that would employ other people.

maybe the fastest way for China to raise the birth rate would be tell the truth about abortion - about its dangers, about what becomes of the child

It is said that up to 90% of China's front line troops in some areas are only sons. There is an ancient taboo in China about sending only sons into battle to die. The PLA leadership must be under great presure on that one.

It seems like every country that encouraged abortion over childbirth is on the same path. Most European countries will eventually plummet in population. But burgeoning populations in the Middle East in Africa will gladly move in and take over (as they are doing already).

This was a topic that I discussed with friends 15-20 years ago. My query then was, "What happens to a country when a huge number of young men find that there are NO women to marry?"
I don't really know, but it certainly cannot be anything good.

When the Chicoms instituted & savagely enforced their 1 child policy I'm sure there were some who saw this coming.
But,as is so often the case, the party silenced them.
Bet they wish otherwise now.

Tinker with God’s plan for a healthy world via healthy families, and disasters results. The Egyptians in Exodus were so alarmed at the burgeoning birth rate of the Hebrews that they sought to kill every male child. But the babies just kept on coming. More people equals more strength in numbers and prosperity.

#6, it wouldn't matter. They knew they were killing their child. That was their intent. If a couple could only have one child, it had to be a boy. Infant girls were killed so the family could keep trying until the got that son. There aren't enough females available now and are very expensive to court.
As for invading other countries to find wives, I have my doubts. The Chinese are very insular. Even those that move out of the country will shun relatives who marry non-Chinese.

When quality of life is so terrible, the last thing people want to do is bring children into it.

When we were in China for some weeks in 1986, there were billboards all over the country, illustrated with photos of adorable baby girls, urging parents to not kill their girl babies (not in so many words, of course).

It's not only one child, but many Chinese families wanted only male children. So the one child they had or kept was a son.

China has had that one child policy for so long that it's now ingrained into the population. China sowed the seed so now they have to live with it.

Good article. I've been following this for years because it means the future of China is much less strong than has been portrayed.
On the plus side, Japan DOES have a shrinking population but they have effectively managed the decline. China however, never got rich before they got old. And with the birth numbers so low, they're getting old fast.
