Biden to unveil stricter emissions
standards for vehicles, exceeding
Obama-era regulations

President Biden will unveil sweeping new regulations on cars and trucks on Thursday, returning America over the next five years to the strict standards that the Obama administration had imposed but former President Trump walked back. The proposed rules drafted by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation would tighten emissions standards to be more in line with aggressive measures established by California in 2019, but which Mr. Trump had blocked. On mileage rules, automakers also will be required to raise their average miles-per-gallon score of their fleets by 3.7% starting with the model year 2023, which would include cars sold next year.

Comments:

Bet your bottom dollar that the US Congress knew this was coming and adjusted their investment portfolios accordingly; that's what they do, and why. Meanwhile, we could increase MPG and reduce smog simply by removing ethanol from the gasoline, while also making gasoline prices drop, but President Dubya the Compassionate needed to do a favor for Archer Daniels Midland, so that's off the table. It's incredible what presidents to to hamper our lives.

Entirely unnecessary. Cars with modern systems and catalytic converters put out extremely little pollution. CO2 is NOT pollution. The air is much cleaner today in this country than it was when I was a child and young man, and cleaner by incredible margins from the air in China and much of the rest of the world. LEAVE US ALONE.

There isn't nearly enough electric power generation capacity in the Unites States to power an enormous fleet of boutique EVs that will be good for local trips only. Getting your kicks on Route 66 (or what bits remain of it) on the trip from Chicago to LA will require numerous overnight stops in charging stations. Gasoline powered, that trip could be outlawed before long by the Gorons who seek a Green world, no matter the cost. As envisioned in 2035, the trip will take days longer than it did in 1948 when Nat King Cole sang about it. Is this progress? How are long haul trips going to be possible for truckers who deliver, essentially, everything we buy? And the rest of us who might like to travel somewhere far away by car. Oil is not a fossil fuel, and we're not about to run out of it. It's abiotic (in other words, not a "fossil fuel") and issues from the deep earth where it's hot enough (1,500 C) and pressurized enough (50,000 atmospheres of pressure) to brew up the iron oxide and calcium carbonate 'that is so abundant in the deep earth. End ethanol and bio fuels. They're wasteful and unnecessary, except to the distillers and their sub-contractors.

New York shattered its COVID cases record for the third day running, recording an enormous 44,431 new cases on Christmas Eve. She blamed the huge spike on the Omicron variant, estimated to be behind 92% of new infections in the Empire State, and said: 'This is a very, very contagious variant.'(Snip)On Friday, Hochul also said that essential workers in New York now only have to isolate for five days after they test positive for COVID if they're vaccinated and have suffered a so-called breakthrough infection.

A fourth jab could now be rolled out early to millions of Britons after a new study showed protection against Omicron wanes within three months of a booster. People infected with the contagious variant are 70 per cent less likely to end up in hospital, an official analysis of real-world cases has confirmed.
