A Homeland Security-backed study has found that it’s unlikely Central American countries can boost their economies enough to stop people from trying to migrate to the U.S., undercutting President Biden’s plans to rely on nation-building to curb the border surge. Incomes rise tenfold—an incomparable lure—for migrants from the key Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador by working in the U.S., according to the Borders, Trade and Immigration Institute. “The potential economic gain following migration from the Northern Triangle to the U.S. is enormous,” the institute concluded. “In the presence of a wage gap this large, even significant percentage changes

A lawsuit opposing the Houston Methodist Hospital network’s mandate that employees must get the COVID-19 vaccine has been shot down at the federal level. A U.S. District judge on Saturday tossed the lawsuit from employees of the Texas hospital system who argue they shouldn’t be required to get vaccinated. The dismissal comes after 178 staffers who declined to get the vaccine were suspended by Houston Methodist, which had instituted a June 7 deadline for employees to receive the shots. A claim made by the lawsuit’s lead plaintiff, Jennifer Bridges, describing the vaccines as “experimental and dangerous” was refuted by the judge.

Alexis Mirra has been learning how to sew the past few weeks, and even bought a thimble. It’s not a hobby, it’s a necessity to affix new patches on the uniforms of fellow police officers in Hopewell Township. The patches feature the colors from the Pride flag, the symbol of the LGBTQ community, and officers are voluntarily wearing them for the remainder of June, for Pride Month. The patches were Mirra’s idea and now project, and the detective believes a first in the Garden State.(Snip) About half the department is wearing the patches, which goes beyond their personal choice. “It shows support for the LGBTQ community

Happy LGBTQ surprise month! Google’s latest Easter egg has been found—and it turns a dull spreadsheet into a colorful celebration of LGBTQ Pride. In software terms, an Easter egg is “a message, trick, or unusual behavior hidden inside a computer program by its creator,” as Nick Montfort, a professor of digital media at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology explains in his 2009 book “Racing the Beam: The Atari Video Computer System.”(Snip) By typing the word “PRIDE,” in capital letters, across columns in Google Sheets, users are immediately gifted with a rainbow-colored spreadsheet. Each column represents a color of the LGBTQ Pride flag,

An Iowa man who assaulted another man for calling him out for wearing his face mask incorrectly has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after removing it entirely and spitting in the victim's face. 'If I have it, you have it!' Shane Wayne Michael told Mark Dinning after the disgusting attack, implying he had infected him with the COVID-19 virus. Both men were at the Vision 4 Less eyewear store in Des Moines on November 11 of last year when Dinning allegedly asked the 42-year-old to secure his face mask over his nose as Michael had pulled his mask down slightly,

Top cops say they fear that the US could be hit by a horrific summer of mass shootings—with four states alone witnessing gun atrocities within the last 24 hours. Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter Jr and Chuck Wexler, from the Police Executive Research Forum, said a recent explosion in the number of shootings appears to be a long term trend, rather than a blip. Minter spoke after a man was killed and seven were injured in a mass drive-by shooting in the Georgia city on Friday night.(Snip)He said: 'It's very disturbing what we're seeing across the country and the level of gun violence

A federal judge has halted Joe Biden's 'unconstitutional' $4 billion program to pay up to 120 percent of black, Hispanic, Asian or Native American farmers' debt, after 12 white farmers sued claiming it discriminated against them. Wisconsin Judge William Griesbach issued a temporary restraining order Thursday blocking the loan forgiveness program Biden put in place after saying he wanted to tackle longstanding inequalities for farmers of color.
Judge Griesbach said the plan failed to provide adequate examples of recent hardships imposed on farmers from minority backgrounds. He also claimed that in trying to end one type of discrimination, the program ended up creating another.

Two Boston school officials have resigned over surfaced private text messages slamming White parents as “delusional” and “racist.” Boston School Committee Chairwoman Alexandra Oliver-Dávila and committee member Lorna Rivera submitted their resignations after facing backlash for text messages sent to one another during a committee meeting in October. “Wait until the white racists start yelling at us,” Ms. Rivera said to Ms. Oliver-Dávila at the time in a text message obtained through a Boston Globe public records request. “Whatever. They’re delusional,” Ms. Oliver-Dávila, who is of Argentinian and Nicaraguan descent, responded. “I hate WR,” added Ms. Oliver-Dávila, referring to West Roxbury, The Globe reported.

New York took a step closer toward reparations for slavery on Wednesday.
The state Assembly passed a bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Charles Barron, that would set up a commission to study slavery and its impact on Black New Yorkers. It would have the commission determine the amount of reparations and who should get them. “Some people say, ‘well I didn’t oppress you, my European ancestors came at the turn of the century. Why should I have to pay?’ I don’t care if you came here last night,” Barron said. “You benefited from the ill-gotten gains.”(Snip) Five political appointees would be on the commission

A new study showed a sharp increase in emergency department visits for attempted suicide attempts by teenage girls during the pandemic compared to a small increase in teenage boys. Suicide attempts among 12- to 17-year-old girls surged during the pandemic, and increased the longer lockdown and social distancing orders were in place, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among teenage girls the average weekly visits to the emergency department for suspected suicide attempts from February 2021 to March 2021 was 50.6 percent higher than the same period in 2019, the study said. President Biden said Saturday he will sign legislation creating a national memorial at the site of a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, where 49 people were killed five years ago. Mr. Biden also used the anniversary of the attack at the Pulse Nightclub to call for stricter gun regulations. “Pulse Nightclub is hallowed ground,” the president said in a statement. “But there is more we must do to address the public health epidemic of gun violence in all of its forms–mass shootings and daily acts of gun violence that don’t make national headlines.”(Snip) “It is long past time we ban assault weapons
