An award-winning author has pulled out of translating inauguration poet Amanda Gorman’s work into Dutch—because of a furious uproar that a black writer was not chosen instead. Gorman, 22, personally chose Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, the youngest winner of the International Booker prize, to translate her collection, “The Hill We Climb,” according to her Dutch publisher, Meulenhoff. But the choice sparked intense outrage, with journalist and activist Janice Deul writing in Volkskrant that the translator should be a “spoken-word artist, young, female and unapologetically Black.”(Snip) “They are white, nonbinary, have no experience in this field, but according to Meulenhoff are still

I'm honestly convinced liberalism is a brain disease. Someone needs to do an unbiased (if that's possible anymore) scientific comparison between conservative and liberal brains.

And who are these people anyway ... never heard of any of them. And why is the race, color, or sexual status a consideration when a service is being provided ... I know, I know ... stupid question. The party of tolerance and unity has neither. Besides the utter ridiculousness of it all, consider this: you can probably count the number of non-whites that speak Dutch on your hands.

...the translator should be a “spoken-word artist, young, female and unapologetically Black.”
Simple question: Why? The first thing that popped into my mind was the Barbara Billingsly "Oh Stewardess, I speak jive" scene from the movie Airplane.

So much of this is a few self important little s----s drunk with power. What is horrendous is those who should know better who defer: e.g. The Simpsons with no more Hank Azaria for APU or anyone other than a Black man to voice a Black character....so long Simpsons. Or Dr. Suess being banned by a bunch of left wing self important Librarians or whomever---though not a word when Obama spoke up for him years ago. So disgusting!!!!! People have GOT to stand up and complain......I have actually written The Simpsons saying Thank God for South Park!!!!!! (and Last Man Standing ---two series that do NOT defer!!!!!!!!.

I'm sure the customers, those very few Dutch that want to read this literary work in Dutch, will be demanding that the translator be black and young and female. Cause, its just now worth reading without the people working on the translation are the right skin color.

This female black poet wanted a poetess who could write skillfully in Dutch and who is competent in English to translate her poetry. The pool of such individuals in the Netherlands--indeed, in the world, is quite small. If you want someone who is "authentically" black to do this job, there is virtually no one competent for the job. How many authentically "black" poetesses are there in the Netherlands?

How can one be "Unapologetically Black, but no "Unapologetically white, because that is racist.

Since when is the traditional Dutch citizen black? I don't mean that in a bad way, but like America, I always thought that the Dutch were a traditional white European nation. So this hubbub over the translator and her ethnic background is beyond plaid ridiculous.

I just read Amanda's 'poem.'
It stinks.
Trite, high school pablum.
It is clear that the 'poet laureate' title goes with a big dose of affirmative action.

Did you learn anything from this, Marieke? Wake up and smell the tulips.
#13 - Although not very black, the Netherlands is rapidly becoming majority-muslim. It's predicted to be the first Western European country that will fall under the scimitar.

Amanda Gorman chose the translator she thought would do the best job of translating her work. It is none of the activists business who the author selected to translate her work. If the author has no issue with the translators race, nobody else should. THese activists need to get over themselves.

It is all grift. That said, I know good black families who have kept their heads down for years. Their sons and daughters have prospered because their parents warned them about being caught up in politics.

Marxists say only they can bring the world together, as long as everyone follows the capricious demands of random czars. Here, a black writer is prevented from selecting her own translator, who on the plus side is nonbinary but unacceptable because it is not "Unapologetically bLACK" (which means what, brawling with fast food workers and talking back at movie screens)?
