She said the Uber driver threatened to rape her if she told anyone what happened. But she did tell, calling 911 and reporting the alleged assault to Uber.
In the following days, her injuries began to heal but she feared he'd be allowed back on the road — and that’s exactly what happened.
It was a warm summer evening in Seattle around 8 or 9 p.m. on Aug. 3 when the vacationing 41-year-old woman — whom BuzzFeed News is not naming due to her fears for her safety — summoned an Uber to take her from the Ballard neighborhood to her hotel. It took the driver some time to find her

"Ridesharing firms should also strengthen their background checks and screen drivers for social skills and psychology before they hit the road"
Cameras, speed recording devices and GPS should be required in these cars. Background checks are a no-brainer but this is Seattle where there is something in the air or the water, or both.

I was taught at the age of 6 never to get in a car with a Stranger. I don't! Ever! I hate it that these young women think it's a natural thing to do. It's not!

We got vomit-frauded by an Uber driver. The pics he sent to the company looked like somebody gave birth in his backseat. We fought back hard but Uber wasn't going to budge-- except that very day it broke nationally that this was a recurring thing in Miami, so they refunded the up charge. Overall, though, we've usually had great Uber drivers.

So an accusation is all that’s required for a man to lose his job? Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty in a court of law?

OK so I got in an Uber at a major airport on my way to Mayo Clinic. On the freeway, the driver turned around and looked me straight in the eye and said, "I think I should tell you I'm a vampire." He appeared deadly serious. I decided he must be joking around for who knows what reason and so I tried really hard to not look panicked and said, "Well it's good we're going to Mayo Clinic because there's lots of blood there." He stared at me without cracking a smile and said, "I know. That's why I took this ride."
I frantically texted my son who called Uber and reported that I felt totally uncomfortable with the inappropriate comments and was still in the car with the driver. To Uber's credit, we were met at Mayo Clinic by a police officer and I have no idea what happened to the driver after that, except I was told later he lost his job. But Uber followed up with me several times and apologized profusely.
Who knows what a background check on this guy would've turned up...but I totally agree with cameras or recording devices.

I had my hair cut recently by a woman that used to drive for Uber. She said you never know where the person you are to pick up is going ahead of time. She accepted a rider and found out he wanted to go to a city five hours away. She called her boyfriend to ask if he thought he car was in good enough shape for a trip that long. She thought this fellow was a drug dealer. She soon quit after finishing this ride.
I would not use Uber. They need to run criminal background checks and make sure that cars are safe.

#7, for clarification purposes:
I was told by Uber that if a driver has a "90% acceptance rate" then (and ONLY then) the driver IS given the passenger's destination. He then has a minute to either accept or reject that passenger, based upon that passenger's destination.
They use this 90% figure to assure there's no discrimination against taking a passenger to the boondocks or to some undesirable area. If a driver accepts 90% of pick-ups WITHOUT knowing the destination, Uber rewards them by giving them the destination and giving the driver the option of accepting or rejecting the trip. But the moment they fall into the 89% or less category, they no longer can see the passenger's destination.

#7. When I order Uber’s for our truck drivers I always have to put in a pick up location and destination. My husband will sometimes ask for a detour to a fast food place and they’ve always been accommodating.
Funny story, I ordered one for a driver, he had a random drug test to take. I always tell them the name of the Uber driver and color of the car. A girl was on her way to pick him up and all of a sudden it changed to a man. I told him maybe she wasn’t comfortable picking up a fare at a truck stop and really I couldn’t blame her for that. Safety is a two way street.

Have lead a sheltered life. Why would anyone choose Uber or Lft over an ordinary taxicab? I've had problems with cabs. Drivers who want to argue over politics. Drivers who drive 80 mph in a 35 mph zone. Drivers who were drinking while driving. But they took me where I was going and I didn't get sexually assaulted or physically attacked. I prefer to drive myself.

Not ever interested in using Uber. Never have, very unlikely to ever use it. I drive my own car at home, don't drink, and I VERY much prefer to rent a car when I travel by air. Uber looks like a crap shoot at best, and I am not interested.

A female alone at night in a city these days is taking a big chance when she gets into a vehicle with a male who she does not know. That should be a primary rule of thumb that females should follow.

When they first came to this area it was announced on TV. I had a hard time finding the company and when I did, I thought the call had been routed to Russia. Some guy with a miserable attitude said "We are a cab company" No one is talking about how many women have been raped by Uber drivers, including a local college girl who thought she was getting a safe ride home after drinking.
There is another wrinkle here. Medicare provided transportation also uses Uber and taxis. I was really uncomfortable with a driver's questions. Do you live alone? Any kids in the area? This person knows you are going to a medical appointment, how long you will be there because you have a pick up time. Scary.
