House Democrats thought they had an easy issue for rallying the black vote: bringing up reparations for slavery as an election issue and holding congressional hearings. What better way to rally coveted black voters than to hold out a big pile of reparations money along with lot of talk about victimization derived from evils committed in the past?
It didn't work out the way they thought it would.
A large number of Black intellectuals and pundits weighed in, not just at the hearing, but on Twitter and beyond, making a hash of the Democrat "narrative."
Quillette columnist Coleman Hughes, who's a Black Democrat, argued in testimony

Dont forget the Golden Circle debacle, where the Dems tried to overthrow democratically elected governments around the Caribbean prior to the Civil War. Their attempt to create slave markets from populations of native Americans at the hands of their puppet governments, was a failure, but shows the elitist mentality that continues to this day.
It was also largely Democrats involved in starting every major war, for good or I'll, that America has been involved in from the founding to the last decade of the 20th century.
And Democrats have by their words and actions, openly supported some of the most horrific tyrants the modern world has ever seen: Mao, Hitler, Stalin, Castro, the despicable sadist, Che' Guevara...
Democrats have a lot to answer for.

I'm still trying to figure out how Reparations would work.
If it comes from our tax dollars then blacks would be paying themselves.
Would any citizens who had no family background in this country before the end of the Civil War have to pay? That would be unfair.
What if some of the blacks here are descendants of the black slave traders in Africa? Do they have to pay reparations or do they get reparations despite causing the problem?
What about Asians or Indians who are here? They had nothing to do with slavery!
Do only black people who have descendants who were slaves get reparations or do they all?
What if they were given a plot of land after they were freed? Do we deduct that from the reparations?
So many questions, so few answers...

Isn't this whole reparations thing ignoring something? Slavery didn't start in America, it ended here. For the first time in history, England and the US ended slavery on a near hemispheric basis. Sure, there is blame to be dispensed, but maybe some thanks are in order too.

Reparations or should we say, the study into reparations is simply another gig for Washington Ins. See if any of the race hustlers volunteer themselves as "dollar a day men".

Those pushing reparations are not dealing with logic and common sense - they just think they can push affirmative action even further and make a few bucks. They are even losing the support of Leftist do-gooders.

What about exempting those of us that are descended from men killed opposing slavery during the Civil War?
Better yet, give me reparations from the Black Slave descendants that are awarded reparations. My Great Great Grandfather was killed trying to gain their freedom. Don't the descendants of ancestors that were killed in the Civil War deserve recompense for fighting to free the slaves?

Hey, this could be a good thing! Enforce Burgess Owen’s plan that only Democrats should pay reparations since they are the ones who inflicted 200 years of misery on blacks. Then sit back and watch every Democrat outside of the Beltway register in the Republican Party.

I second #8's idea. The Dems are responsible for slavery and Jim Crow in the first place-when Burgess Ownes was speaking I wish he would have called out the black Dems on the panel as race traitors. They would have fainted!

Democrats are tiresome in their bleating about wanting to ''have conversations'' about reparations, and other pandering issues. All democrats want is to dangle the prospect of getting free money, which will NEVER happen, just to mislead blacks again and get votes.
Having conversations about something doesn't require democrats to actually follow through, it's just a way to agitate.

The shock is not about the specific issue of reparations but that Blacks would speak against dems, list their actions that have hurt Blacks, and suggest they be held accountable. Dems, since FDR, have taken many actions that have inflicted harm on this great Country. After things implode they deny all responsibility and often implement even worse measures. Dems being held accountable is just something that is not done. But here someone is suggesting that exact thing. Dems must be terrified.

REPARATION HEARING ALL ABOUT DEMOCRATS WANTING TO PAY BLACK AMERICANS FOR THERE VOTE...
The Democrat party should be the ones paying for reparation.
The Democrat party defended slavery, started the Civil War, opposed Reconstruction, founded the Ku Klux Klan, imposed segregation, and perpetrated lynching, and fought agains the civil rights acts of the 50s and 60s, Don't the Democrats know the Klan was a military force serving the interests of the Democrat Party. How did the Blacks in this Country get so brain washed that they think the Republicans are the Enemy. the Republican Party was founded in 1854 as an anti-slavery party. Its mission
was to stop the spread of slavery...

The only reparation should be a free one way ticket to Liberia, but
ONLY if they permanently give up their US citizenship, cannot EVER come back.
Other than that....not one cent.

Slavery was the policy of the Democrat Party, so the blacks have identified their oppressors, and the liable party. In complete accord, the Democrat Party should reimburse us for the Mueller hoax, keeping the Great Depression going for 10 years, Obamacare, the $500B they stole from Medicare, the $150B they gave Iran, the ethanol scam, the solar and wind energy scams, the climate change scam---and yes, there is a lot more.

#19, This is the reason for the sudden interest in reparations. The democrats see that they are losing control of their black supporters and must gin up hate against Republicans in order to stop the flow. However, with the young, intelligent and articulate blacks speaking out after leaving the democrat plantation, it is creating this frenzy by the democrat party to do something to stop the mass exit. The truth will set you free and many black Americans understand that it was the democrat party that oppressed them, not the Republican Party. Despite the efforts of the democrats to foment hate, we may see a real awakening by many in the black community to the truth. God bless them for speaking out.

The Dems realize know that Trump is handling the big important stuff, so they’re just doing minor stuff, mainly scrounging around for votes, telling groups they are victims, playing identity politics, and, of course, hating Trump.

The black community has allowed their minds to be controlled by bitterness, despair, hatred, anger, violence, and it does them no good. All because of slavery. it is in the interest of the black community to move beyond slavery, and lose all the negative effects that are plaguing them. The only way to defuse this is forgiveness. Forgive the people that enslaved blacks. They are all dead anyway. Forgiveness won't be for the benefit of the slavers. It will be for the benefit of the blacks. Forgive, forget, and move on.

Who are you going to believe the party of the Ku Klux Klan or some Uncle Tom black person speaking the truth.
I don't understand why this is even a debate, dead horse meets the buggy whip, useless.
Congress wants a raise and this is what they spend their time doing besides hating Trump and stonewalling the President from fixing America's problems. I don't think so and reparations have been paid a thousand times over with all the welfare, food stamps, public house, affirmative action and blacks are still stuck in their lives because of senseless 'slavery' talk and money grabbing race hustlers like Al Sharpton.
I'm not discussing this topic because I never owned a slave and there are no slaves that I know of that can debate the topic. End of conversation and democrats are wasting our time.

The first thing that has to be done is to sort out which living blacks here are descendants of black slave owners of which there were more that 10,000 families These people should not receive any compensation. Then, the remainder will have to all prove that they had ancestors who were slaves since blacks who were living in the north weren't slaves. Next we have to eliminate those whose forebears arrived here after the Civil War. A daunting task. Perhaps they should just go to Liberia which was established for them.

To add to #30, we also need to eliminate any blacks who are descended from African tribes which sold other Africans into slavery. Once we get all that straightened out absolutely no one will be eligible for reparations.

One hundred fifty years ago, the lives of more than 620,000 Americans were terminated in the Civil War in order to settle the question of slavery in the United States. Mark any debt of slavery allegedly owed to people who are alive today as "PAID IN FULL." Now get on with our lives -- all of us!

Reparations after the Civil War was to be 40 acres and a mule. How much was an acre worth back then and how much was a mule? I don't think that included women or children.

Well, I figure I should be exempt from half of my assessment because 4 of my great grandparents were certainly not guilty because: 2 came here in 1869 after the war; 1 volunteered in the G.A.R.; and another came to the USA in 1847 when he was only 3 years old. They settled in central Missouri with a Catholic colony. In 1860 several of the families 'escaped' from Missouri and relocated to Minnesota to get away from the guerillas who were burning down the Catholic settlers' homes and farms, and shooting randomly at them including some deaths. So, I figure my people escaped from the earlier version of the Ku Klux Klan - a Democrat Party affiliate. I should be exempt from at least 50% of the reparations, although why my other ancestors are guilty of anything is a mystery. They never owned or approved of slavery.
